AUSTIN – St. Edward's baseball used a big first inning offensively to secure their first sweep of the season, defeating Eastern New Mexico 6-3 Saturday on a gusty afternoon.
The Hilltoppers had a shaky start defensively, making three errors in the first inning resulting in two Greyhound runs. The lead didn't last long, however, as SEU unloaded for five runs in response in the bottom half of the inning.
BLAKE HOLUB drove in three runs himself with a monster double down to right field, clearing the bases before scoring himself on a grounder by
JAKE HAHN.
ENMU added one run in the third to cut the SEU lead to two, 5-3, and then pitching and defense took over as the winds picked up, holding numerous bombs in the park that would traditionally been homeruns.
St. Edward's added an insurance run in the fourth and then the pitching and defense took care of the rest.
CULLEN AINSWORTH went 2-3 from the plate while
CHASE COS was 2-4.
JESSE REED earned his first win of the season in his first start, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.
St. Edward's improves to 3-0 on the season and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play. They remain at home to host Cameron for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 11 am.
