AUSTIN – A strong start by St. Edward's baseball gave way to a strong Chaps finish as the Hilltoppers were defeated 10-9 in extra innings Saturday.
SEU took an early lead, starting with a two-run shot to right field to put the Hilltoppers up 2-0 in the first.
MORGAN ALLEN added a run on a sacrifice fly in the second to give St. Edward's a 3-0 lead.
LCU was able to chip away at the deficit with a two run third, but SEU was quick to respond with three runs of their own in the fourth to push their lead to 6-2.
The Chaps refused to go away, adding three runs in the fifth but the Hilltoppers once again answered with a pair of runs of their own, bringing the count to 8-5 through five innings of play.
SEU added a run in the seventh and then Lubbock Christian took over, scoring three runs in the eighth to pull within one, 9-8. The Chaps got the tying run in the ninth and held the Hilltoppers scoreless in the bottom half of the frame despite getting a runner on third.
A scoreless tenth gave way to LCU scoring the eventual game winner on two outs in the 11
th as St. Edward's was retired in order to end the game.

BLAKE HOLUB all posted two hits in the loss. Garrett Phillips suffered the loss on the mound while starting pitcher
JACK GRANACK went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
The Hilltoppers fall to 6-12 on the year and 6-11 in Lone Star Conference play. They return to action on Sunday, closing the series with Lubbock Christian at 1 pm.
