SARAH PRESTON scored the game-winning goal off a well-executed corner kick with under six minutes to play to send St. Edward's into the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinals Tuesday evening, defeating Lubbock Christian 2-1.
St. Edward's came out ready to play and quickly attacked the Chaps' defense, firing off shots early in the match while earning threatening corner kicks. Their hard work paid off in the 19
th minute as
SARAH PRESTON centered the ball to
MARYANNE CROWE in front of goal. Crowe expertly placed the ball inside the right post to put SEU up 1-0.
LCU's quality looks at goal were few despite taking ten shots in the opening half. The Hilltoppers posted only five shots, but had much higher quality looks with three being on frame.
Just minutes into the second half, Lubbock Christian evened the score 1-1 and the match remained deadlocked throughout the majority of the half. With just under six minutes remaining, the Hilltoppers earned a corner kick, their sixth of the match, and made the most of it as
EMMA VIQUEZ assisted on Preston's goal, taking her shot from 18 yards out, scoring the eventual game winner.
LCU led 18-14 in shots but SEU was 6-2 on corners in the win.
MEGHAN DUNNING was outstanding in goal, logging eight saves.
With the win, St. Edward's improves to 5-4 on the year. They move on to the LSC Semifinal, taking on #1 seed Angelo State on Saturday.
