Women's soccer falls to #18 UC Colorado Springs in opener

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - St. Edward's women's soccer out played #18 UC Colorado Springs in the second half, but their comeback came up short as they fell 3-1 Friday in their season opener. 

UCCS took the first shot of the game, but it was SEU's KATIE GAY that had the first real look at goal. Her shot from 30-yards out in the left of goal just six minutes in was blocked and cleared by the Mountain Lions to keep the game locked at 0-0. Just five minutes later, UCCS scored the first goal of the game with a low shot to the right post.

The Mountain Lions made it a 2-0 lead 12 minutes later with another low shot to the right post and held onto the advantage until halftime. 

St. Edward's started the second half strong, earning a pair of free kicks in the first five minutes. Gay once again applied pressure with a shot from the middle of goal just outside the box that veered just right. SARAH GUNDERSON got the Hilltoppers on the board, assisted by CAROLINE KIRSCHNER, in the 59th minute. 

SEU searched hard for the equalizer but were unable to find it. UCCS added some breathing room with a goal in the 87th minute. 

St. Edward's trailed 13-7 in shots for the match but led 6-5 in the second half. Gunderson, Gay and KATELYN SMITH all recorded two shots to lead the Hilltoppers. MEGHAN DUNNING received the start in goal and posted three saves. 

SEU starts the year at 0-1 and return to the pitch on Saturday, facing Adams State at 1 pm CT.
