AUSTIN –
MORGAN GARY hit a baseline jumper with just four tenths of a second left and
SAMMIE DUFEK followed with a pair of free throws to seal the win as St. Edward's defeated UT Permian Basin 67-63 Monday afternoon.
SEU started the game really well with a 7-0 run and led by ten points, 32-22, at halftime after a last second layup by Dufek.
UTPB reworked their plan at the break and were able to pull within five points, 42-37, heading into the final frame of regulation.
The Falcons' Holly Hemmeline got hot in the fourth quarter from three-point range and was able to even the score 47-47 with just over six minutes remaining. It was a dogfight to the finish but SEU held onto a slight advantage until UTPB's Alexus Wykoff made a layup to send the game into overtime.
After trading free throws to open overtime, Wykoff gave the Falcons a three point lead with a jumper, putting UT Permian Basin up 56-53 with 3:22 to go. Gary hit a layup and followed with a fastbreak layup to put the Hilltoppers on top 63-61 with just over a minute remaining.
Wykoff drew the foul and made both free throws with just 12 seconds remaining to tie the game once again, but Gary had the last laugh with the game winning jumper.
St. Edward's shot 39.7 percent from the floor and 23.1 percent from three point range in the win.
TAYLOR COCKERILL led with 20 points, going 7-11 from the floor and 2-3 from long range. Gary ended with 17 and a team high nine rebounds.
SEU improves to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in Lone Star Conference play while UTPB falls to 4-11, 0-3 in conference action. The Hilltoppers return to action on Thursday, heading to Lubbock, Texas to take on #4 Lubbock Christian at 5:30 pm.
