On Friday, May 6, the St. Edward's University Board of Trustees unanimously voted to reinstate NCAA Division II Men's Soccer and Varsity Cheer.
"Athletics programs create and sustain Hilltopper pride, reinforce our St. Edward's identity and enhance the closeness of our campus community," said university president Montserrat Fuentes, Ph.D. "I am committed to intentional investment in athletics as part of our strategic vision for campus vibrancy at St. Edward's University. Men's Soccer and Varsity Cheer are returning due to immediately available facilities and a clear, long-term path for sustainability."
The expansion will add at least sixty student-athletes to the university family and build on the legacies of more than 600 alumni from both teams. Varsity Cheer returns to the hilltop in Fall 2022, while Men's Soccer will return to Lone Star Conference competition in Fall 2023. This summer, Hilltopper Athletics will conduct a nationwide search for head coaches.
Fundraising, in addition to institutional support, is critical to continued strategic expansion of Hilltopper Athletics. Associate Vice President Debbie Taylor said, "We are building champion athletes, scholars and leaders to become citizens of the world. We are thrilled to invest in these beloved programs, and we know that Hilltopper alumni, families, friends, corporate sponsors, and the university community will also play a transformative role in this expansion through their philanthropic partnership."
