PREVIEW: It's A Battle of the Saints In The LSC Women's Soccer Quarterfinals

| By:
St. Edward's women's soccer earned its spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament in dramatic fashion, clinching a tournament berth with a 2-0 win over Lubbock Christian on the final day of the regular season.

The Hilltoppers are the seventh seed and will take on second-seeded St. Mary's, adding another postseason chapter to the storied Battle of the Saints rivalry.

St. Edward's defeated St. Mary's 2-1 in Austin back in September, getting goals from TRISTYN CABELLO and ARI RAMIREZ, two assists from KATELYN SMITH, some stellar defensive work from RYANN JERGOVICH and MADDI DAVIS, and five big saves from keeper DARIA SCHLUMBOHM

The Hilltoppers lead the series with a 41-22-6 record and are currently on an eight-game winning streak against the Rattlers. St. Edward's earned a 1-0 win in its last trip to San Antonio, getting a game-winner from TRISTYN CABELLO and stopping a penalty kick in the final few minutes to preserve the win. This game is the first postseason meeting between the two rivals since 2016 when St. Edward's defeated St. Mary's 5-0 in the Heartland Conference Semifinals.

St. Mary's (9-4-5, 8-3-1) is ranked sixth in the South Central Region and is second in the LSC in assists (1.29), corner kicks (5.82), and points per game (5.06), trailing only DBU. The Rattlers have a balanced attack. Four St. Mary's players have collected ten or more points, led by Shelby Paniagua's 21. Sydney Varela (15), Juni Ejere (12), and Alexis Truit (11) have also hit that mark. Paniagua is tied for fifth in the conference with seven goals and is second with nine assists.

Three different Hilltoppers have reached double-digit points this year, led by Ramirez's 12 points on a team-high five goals. The speedy forward also has two assists. Cabello ended the season with ten points and has found the back of the net three times in the past four games. The junior forward has scored a goal in each of her three career games against St. Mary's.

CAITLYN GONZALEZ also has ten points, ranking third in the conference with six assists. St. Edward's goalie DARIA SCHLUMBOHM is fourth in the conference in saves with 4.09 per game.

St. Edward's and St. Mary's kicks off at 7 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field in San Antonio, Texas. The game will be live-streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network
