AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Hilltoppers baseball team suffered its first loss of the season in 11 innings, falling 5-4 to the West Texas A&M Buffaloes in the first of a four-game series.
St. Edward's strung together three runs with two out in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. DAVIS DREWEK and JOSH GRAHAM hit back-to-back RBI singles, scoring Kyler Kerlen and CULLEN AINSWORTH, who reached on a walk and single.
West Texas A&M tied the game in the fourth on a three-run blast from Eddy Savoie off St. Edward's starter Welsey Gafford, who went seven innings with ten strikeouts and the three runs scored.
St. Edward's retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. CONNOR COX reached on a one-out single to right field, followed by HUNTER CONNER drawing a walk, and West Texas A&M relief pitcher Justice Hayes hitting WESTON SYMES to load the bases. CARLO FIGUEROA drew a walk to score Cox and retake the lead. West Texas A&M responded with a double play to get out of the inning and mitigate the damage.
SETH TAYLOR took the mound for the Hilltoppers to start the eighth inning, hit two of the first three hitters, and walked another to load the bases with one out. JACK ENGELMANN replaced Taylor and induced a grounder to shortstop, scoring Ryan Johnson when the Hilltoppers couldn't turn the double play.
West Texas A&M loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth inning with a double and two outs. Then St. Edward's turned to its bullpen, inserting AUSTIN ESSEX, who induced a fly out to center and a clutch strikeout to escape the inning unscathed.
St. Edward's grounded into a double play to end the ninth, and West Texas A&M followed suit in the 10th as both teams went scoreless in the inning.
JARED SCHAEFFER replaced Essex in the 11th and walked Kix Ferrel, who pinch-hit for Mike Manetta. After Paul Wittmann grounded out to the mound, Johnson hit an RBI double to left field for the go-ahead run.
Cox reached on a one-out walk in the bottom of the 11th and advanced to second on a Conner groundout to get into scoring positions. However, Syme went down swinging to end the game.
St. Edward's drops to 6-1, and West Texas A&M improves to 6-3. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
