Baseball's Win Streak Snapped by St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's committed four errors and left ten runners stranded as St. Mary's snapped the Hilltoppers' 12-game win streak with a 7-3 victory in the third game of the weekend series.

The Hilltoppers struck first with a two-RBI double from DAVIS DREWEK sent to right field, scoring LANCE LITTLE and CONNOR COX, who reached on back-to-back singles in the first inning.

St. Edward's committed the first of several miscues in the second when JACK GRANACK struck out leadoff hitter Brandon Broughton on a wild pitch that allowed him to reach first. Easton Parrish drove Broughton in with an RBI triple to center field.

St. Mary's added three runs in the fourth. Clay Bradford led off with a walk, then scored on Broughton's RBI double to left center. Then, Parrish reached on a throwing error that scored Broughton. Rudy Solis followed with a single through the left side to put runners in the corners, and Parrish scored an unearned run on a double play.

The Hilltoppers committed three errors in the fifth, allowing a run on a failed pickoff attempt and an RBI single up the middle from Broughton.

JACK ENGELMANN replaced Granack on the mound to start the sixth and walked Solis to start the inning, then a one-out RBI double from Trey Guajardo for the 7-2 lead. COLIN JACKSON replaced Engelmann to start the seventh and retired six of the next seven hitters.

CONNOR COX drew a two-out walk against relief pitcher Andrew Girod, then advanced to second on a balk, and scored on an RBI single through the right side by Little. However, Girod struck out CULLEN AINSWORTH to end the game.

Little and WESTON SYMES each hit 2-for-4, with Little also driving in a run and scoring a run. Drewek hit 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and TREVOR SEBEK, Cox, and RYAN FEDDERSEN each had a hit.

Broughton led St. Mary's with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Relief pitcher Matt Bundy (2-0) picked up the win, striking out five with two walks and three hits surrendered.

Granack (5-4) went five innings in the loss, allowing three of his six runs surrendered to be earned, giving up five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Hilltoppers drop to 29-7 with a 27-7 conference record. St. Edward's and St. Mary's will conclude the series on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
