SAN ANGELO, Texas – Lubbock Christian hit three home runs in a 10-6 win over St. Edward's to eliminate the Hilltoppers from the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship Tournament.
Jarred Gibson put Lubbock Christian on the board with a two-out, three-run blast to left field in the bottom of the first, scoring Brevin McCool and Eduardo Acosta, who reached on a single and a walk. The Chaps added a run in the second and third innings, scoring on an Acosta sacrifice fly and a 4-6-3 double play with a runner on third.
St. Edward's responded with three runs in the fourth, taking advantage of control issues from Lubbock Christian relief pitcher Marcos Escalera. First, LANCE LITTLE sparked the Hilltoppers with a one-out single up the middle.
Then Escalera walked DAVIS DREWEK and CULLEN AINSWORTH to load the bases, then RYAN FEDDERSEN to score a run. Finally, MATTHEW GILES hit an RBI single, and KYLER KERLIN drew another walk, scoring another run.
Ainsworth tied the game with a two-RBI single to center field in the fifth, scoring CONNOR COX and Little, who reached on a leadoff double and walk.
Nate Van Maanen put Lubbock Christian back up with a two-RBI single through the left side in the sixth, and Carson Ogilvie and McCool hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth, combining for three more runs to put the game out of reach.
JOSH GRAHAM opened the ninth with a leadoff double for St. Edward's, and Little drove him in with an RBI double, but Lubbock Christian quickly ended the game.
Six different pitchers saw action for St, Edward's. JACK ENGELMANN (1-2) picked up the loss, going three innings, striking out five, and surrendering two hits, one walk, and two runs.
Cox and Little had two hits each for St. Edward's. Cox had one run, and Little scored twice and drove in another. Ainsworth hit 1-for-3 with two RBIs. TREVOR SEBEK, DAVIS DREWEK, MATTHEW GILES, KYLER KERLIN, and Graham each had a hit.
Angelo State defeated Lubbock Christian in the next game to win the LSC Championship. KYLER KERLIN and MATTHEW GILES earned All-Tournament honors.
St. Edward's drops to 39-13. The Hilltoppers will wait for the NCAA Division II selection show to learn their place in the NCAA Regional.
