PITTSBURG, Kan. – St. Edward's men's track & field opened its inaugural season with four top-10 finishes between two runners at the Crimson & Gold Invitational.
"What an awesome experience for our men this weekend in the first indoor meet of the inaugural season," St. Edward's head coach Steven Cary says. "We came to Kansas with a lot of excitement and energy and did some good things to build on, as well as some areas we need to improve moving forward."
JORDON CHAPPELL and
DYLAN SEQUEIRA led St. Edward's with a pair of top-10 finishes each, showing the range of the Hilltoppers' talent from sprints to distance running.
Chappell sprinted out of the gates with a 10th-place finish in the 200, clocking a personal-best 22.01. The junior from McAllen, Texas, followed that performance up with a sixth-place finish in the 400 at 48.97. He was also a 22nd-place 4x400 relay team member, joining Christian Mendoza,
TYRIQ WILSON, and Andre Moore to run a 3:24.25.
Sequeira set new personal bests in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs, placing sixth in the 3K at 8:33.82 and eighth in the 5K at 14:50.09.
"I'm happy with how Dylan competed in his events, and Jordon had three excellent performances," Cary says. "I'm proud of Tyriq for his performance in the relay, and Christian and Andre also showed a lot of grit. We had a few guys who couldn't race in the 4x400, and both stepped up big for us this weekend."
Wilson also competed in the 400, placing 24th at 50.38. Moore paced St. Edward's in the 60 meters, placing 65th at 7.2. Mendoza (81st, 7.29), Coby Harrison (87th, 7.32), George Shelton (89th, 7.34), and David Marquez (95th, 7.39) also competed in the 60 meters.
