St. Edward’s Men Set Three School Records, Claim Relay Title in Kingsville

| By:
KINGSVILLE, Texas — St. Edward's men's track and field pieced together a balanced performance against a deep field at the Cactus Cup, highlighted by school records, a relay victory, a podium finish in the jumps, and competitive efforts across the sprint and hurdle groups.

Competing in a meet filled with regional powers like Angelo State and host Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Hilltoppers found their closing gear in the men's 4x400 relay. AREEB MAHMOOD, MASYN VELA, GAVIN ANGUIANO, and ERIK CARMONA combined to win the event in 3:26.02, delivering St. Edward's top finish of the day.

TYRIQ WILSON reset the program record in the 100 meters, clocking 10.74 into a strong tailwind to lead the Hilltoppers' sprint group. CRISTIAN MENDOZA followed in 11.01 and later added a 12th-place finish in the 200 meters at 22.64, with JAYDEN LOPEZ contributing a 23.52.

In the field, the Hilltoppers rewrote the record book. Kaylon Long set a new program mark in the triple jump, building on a third-place finish with a leap of 13.40 meters (43-11.75). Lopez added another record to the day, breaking the school mark in the long jump while placing sixth at 6.72 meters (22-0.75). DAVID MARQUEZ contributed in both events, placing sixth in the triple jump and 13th in the long jump.

The quarter-mile and middle-distance group added steady production. Mahmood clocked 50.82 in the 400 meters, while Anguiano followed at 52.74. Carmona turned in a sixth-place finish in the 800 at 1:59.88, and HOGAN HEIKKINEN matched that placement in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:07.48. DYLAN MCCOY and PARKER STEVENS added depth in the event.

The hurdles group continued to trend upward, with MASYN VELA placing eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.22, followed closely by ISAAC KIM in 15.68. Vela later doubled back as a key leg on the winning 4x400 relay.

Across the board, the Hilltoppers showed range—resetting the record book in the sprints and jumps, scoring in multiple event groups, and closing the meet with a statement relay performance.
