AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's track and field welcomes Owen Sutherland as its new sprints coach, joining head coach Chase Rathke in his second season leading the Hilltopper program.

Sutherland arrives on the Hilltop after spending the past three seasons as a graduate assistant at Eastern New Mexico, where he coached the Greyhounds' sprints, hurdles, relays, and jumps. During his tenure, he helped develop five All-Americans, conference champions, school record holders, and NCAA Championship qualifiers while competing in the Lone Star Conference.

This past season, Sutherland helped guide Eastern New Mexico to school records in the men's 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay, while coaching Lone Star Conference champions in the men's 400 meters, 4x100-meter relay, decathlon, and women's 60 meters. His athletes also produced numerous top-five marks in program history, highlighted by first-team All-American Jamoi Jackson in the 400 meters.

Before beginning his coaching career, Sutherland competed at McPherson College, where he was part of the 2021 KCAC championship 4x400-meter relay team and the 2022 conference runner-up distance medley relay. He also competed at Riverside City College, earning a California junior college state championship before transferring to McPherson.

Sutherland joins a St. Edward's program coming off a season that saw the Hilltoppers establish multiple school records and continue building momentum under Rathke's leadership.
