AUSTIN, Texas – The final game between St. Edward's baseball and CSU-Pueblo was pure chaos over the final few innings, with the ThunderWolves topping the Hilltoppers 12-11 in 11 innings.
Drewek Davis tied the game on a grand slam into the right-field netting in the bottom of the seventh and nearly repeated the feat in the eighth, launching a moonshot that hooked foul before going down swinging.
St. Edward's opened with a three-up, three-down defensive inning with two strikeouts from starting pitcher
LUKE NEGRETE and followed with five runs in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with their first three hitters reaching, scoring on a hit batter and walks, followed by a two-RBI single by
JOEL SHEA and a sacrifice fly from
WESTON SYMES.
Negrete struggled in the second inning, walking back-to-back hitters and surrendering RBI singles to Jabo Arriola and Kade Snodgrass, and was relieved by
JACK GRANACK. Christian Casteneda opened the third with a solo blast, and the ThunderWolves added another run on an error.
After the rough first inning, CSU-Pueblo starter Cameron Saso found his rhythm, retiring the side in order over the second, third, and fourth innings, striking out seven of nine, and CSU-Pueblo carried the momentum into the top of the fourth with a one-out solo blast to left from Snodgrass to tie the game.
Jake Olguin-Pacheco relieved Saso to start the fifth and continued the momentum by striking out the side before struggling in the sixth and getting replaced by Dylan Weaver.
BEN SMEDSHAMMER started on the mound for St. Edward's in the fifth and gave up the lead on an RBI groundout to Arriola. Casteneda opened the sixth with a leadoff home run, and Brad Stone added two more on a two-RBI double in the seventh for a 10-5 lead.
Jacob Petersheim took the mound to start the seventh for CSU-Pueblo, and the Hilltoppers took advantage, scoring on an RBI single from Little and loading the bases on a walk. CSU-Pueblo turned to Jake Novak, and Drewek greeted him with a grand slam that rocketed into the right-field netting to tie the game.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but Conner Cox's deep fly ball to left field fell short of the fence to leave runners stranded.
Stone hit a solo blast in the tenth, and
TY MURRAY responded in the bottom of the inning with a clutch RBI single to tie the game in his first at-bat. CSU-Pueblo scored on a wild pitch in the 11th, and Little went down swinging in the bottom of the inning with the tying run on base.
St. Edward's drops to 3-3 with the loss. The Hilltoppers will travel next weekend to play West Texas A&M.
