Baseball Closes UT Tyler Series With Two Losses

TYLER, Texas – St. Edward's baseball struggled on the final day of its four-game road series against UT Tyler, dropping both games in its doubleheader.

Game 1: UT Tyler 19, St. Edward's 6

Control issues on the mound for St. Edward's contributed heavily to a Patriots 11-run fourth inning, costing the Hilltoppers a 6-2 lead in a 19-6 loss.

DAVIS DREWEK put St. Edward's on the scoreboard in the top of the second with a two-run blast to right field, scoring KYLER KERLIN, who reached on a walk. JOSH GRAHAM followed with a walk, followed by two Hilltopper outs.

A pitch hit CARLO FIGUEROA, and CONNOR COX put the offense back on track with an RBI single through the right side. Figueroa then scored on a wild pitch, TY MURRAY walked, and DIEGO SOLIS drove two in with an RBI single up the middle, giving the team a 6-0 lead.

Ethan Bedgood sparked UT Tyler with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the inning, scoring on Austin Ochoa's RBI single through the left side. Ochoa scored on a sacrifice fly to right field a few hitters later.

UT Tyler opened the fourth with back-to-back hits on a leadoff single from Ochoa, followed by an RBI double down the left-field line.

St. Edward's turned to its bullpen, and things rapidly spun out of control. The Hilltopper bullpen surrendered five walks, one hit batter, and 11 hits, with a Jordan Ardoin grand slam home run capping off the inning, giving UT Tyler a 13-6 lead.

The Patriots scored four more runs on three hits in the next inning, then walked five and allowed two more runs in the sixth, resulting in a 19-6 score.

Game 2: UT Tyler 8, St. Edward's 4

St. Edward's surrendered six runs in the fifth inning in the decisive fourth game, dropping the series three games to one in an 8-4 loss.

The Hilltoppers walked Ochoa to open the second and then hit Blake LaBuda. Ardoin followed with a sacrifice bunt, setting up Connor Clark's sacrifice fly to score Ochoa.

St. Edward's answered in its next at-bat. Drewek opened the third with a double down the left-field line. NICHOLAS ANDERSON moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt, and TREVOR SEBEK scored Drewek on a sacrifice bunt.

Nathan Carriere hit an RBI single in the fourth, and WESTON SYMES scored Drewek with an RBI double to left-center in the fifth.

Lane Hutchinson opened the bottom of the inning with an ominous start for St. Edward's, delivering a leadoff home run to left field. A double, two walks and a hit batter scored another run. An RBI single followed, followed by a wild pitch for another run, followed by an error for UT Tyler's 8-2 lead.

Drewek delivered an RBI single in the sixth, and Anderson drove in St. Edward's final run on a fielder's choice.

St. Edward's drops to 11-14 with an 11-13 conference record after the losses. The Hilltoppers will host Arkansas Fort Smith this weekend for a four-game series starting Friday.
