Baseball Wins Series Against Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – The home runs dried up, but the runs kept pouring in for St. Edward's baseball with six runs in the third inning to score a decisive 10-3 victory over the Oklahoma Christian Eagles to clinch the series 3-1.

After Oklahoma Christian retired the first six Hilltoppers in order, starting pitcher Brendan Kirchhoff hit DILLON FLORES to start the third inning. JOEL SHEA followed with a double to right field to put both runners in scoring position. After WESTON SYMES grounded out, TREVOR SEBEK cleared them both with a two-RBI double.

Sebek's shot to right-center was the first of five consecutive hits for St. Edward's, which also received an RBI double from CARLO FIGUEROA, an RBI single from DAVIS DREWEK, an RBI double from TY MURRAY, and an RBI single from DIEGO SOLIS

Solis's hit to left field triggered Oklahoma Christian's move to the bullpen, bringing out Silas Cowgill to get out of the inning. Matthew Shira replaced Cowgill in the fifth, retired the Hilltoppers in order, and left two stranded in the sixth.

Andrew Alonzo replaced Shira in the seventh, and St. Edward's scored its seventh run, taking advantage of two errors and a Drewek single.

The Hilltoppers scored three more runs in the ninth off reliever Colton Paxton. WESTON SYMES led off with a single down the left-field line, Sebek walked, and after Figueroa went down looking, Drewek flied out to left field, and Symes scored on a throwing error trying to get the runners tagging up.

Murray followed with an RBI double to left field, Solis walked, and the Hilltoppers scored another run on an error.

BRENNAN BERDON started on the mound for St. Edward's and delivered five scoreless innings with only three hits and three walks surrendered with five strikeouts. LUKE NEGRETE relieved him in the sixth and gave the Hilltoppers three perfect innings with three strikeouts and no hits or walks. NATE WINDLE started the ninth and surrendered a three-run blast to Feris before ending the game.

Drewek and Murray each hit 2-for-5 from the three and four spots, combining for three RBI and three runs scored. With the win, St. Edward's improved to 16-17 and back to .500 in conference play at 16-16.

St. Edward's will host St. Mary's next weekend for the Battle of the Saints, starting Friday at 2:00 p.m.
