LAREDO, Texas – St. Edward's baseball got tremendous production from the top of its lineup to rally from an early 4-0 deficit, scoring 13 unanswered runs to steamroll Texas A&M International with a 13-5 win to open the regular season's final four-game series
Texas A&M International struck early, getting back-to-back singles after
JACK GRANACK struck out Isaac Stanwick to open the bottom of the first. Omar Cervantes grounded to first with two on, but the Hilltoppers couldn't turn the double play, getting the out at second but allowing Nomar Prieto to score.
Antonio Buentello hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth, and Joey Coolbaugh moved him over with a sac bunt. Daniel Quiroz grounded into the second out of the inning, moving Buentello to third. Granack walked Ariben Gutierrez, who stole second, and Stanwick hit a two-RBI single to center field. Prieto followed with an RBI double to right-center for the 4-0 lead.
St. Edward's loaded the bases to open the top of the fifth with a leadoff single from
TREVOR SEBEK, a walk drawn by
DAVIS DREWEK, and a pitch hitting
LANCE LITTLE.
The Hilltopper momentum appeared to stall when
DIEGO SOLIS grounded into a double play, scoring Sebek. However,
DILLON FLORES reignited St. Edward's with the first of three consecutive RBI doubles, along with
RYAN FEDDERSEN and
TY MURRAY to tie the game.
Texas A&M International turned to Christopher Sauceda out of the bullpen to replace Isaac Ponce, but the Dustdevils' reliever walked
KYLER KERLIN and
WESTON SYMES back-to-back, and Sebek bunted for a single, driving in Murray for the lead.
Omar Rodriguez started the sixth on the mound for Texas A&M International, and Little greeted him with a monstrous home run. After Solis grounded out, Flores followed with the second home run of the inning. Feddersen kept the run going with a single through the right side, Kerlin walked, and
WESTON SYMES hit an RBI double to left-center.
The Dustdevils turned to another pitcher, but St. Edward's added to its lead with a passed ball. Drewek followed with a leadoff home run in the seventh, giving St. Edward's a 10-4 lead to turn over to
GEORGE HETTRICK and its bullpen.
Hettrick kept Texas A&M International scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, and the Hilltoppers kept pouring in runs. An error in the eighth plated two St. Edward's runs, and Solis followed with an RBI double.
Texas A&M International loaded the bases and scored a run on reliever
SETH TAYLOR in the ninth off Quiroz's RBI single, but Taylor struck out Gutierrez to end the game.
Sebek, Drewek, and LIttle combined to hit 6-for-12 with five RBI and six runs scored. Flores and Feddersen were each 3-for-2 with two runs scored. Flores drove in two runs, and Feddersen had one RBI. Symes was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
St. Edward's improves to 22-25 with a 22-23 conference record and is sixth in the LSC standings. The Hilltoppers will continue their series against Texas A&M International with a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 1:00 p.m.
