Laredo, Texas – St. Edward's baseball's late rally fell short in a 7-6 loss to Texas A&M International in the final game of the regular season to split the four-game series.
The Hilltoppers struck first with a one-out double from
DAVIS DREWEK and back-to-back infield singles from
DILLON FLORES and
DIEGO SOLIS for the 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M International responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. St. Edward's starter
LUKE NEGRETE walked two and surrendered three hits in the bottom of the first. Medina hit an RBI single, Cruz a two-RBI single, and Buentello a sac fly for the 4-1 lead.
TY MURRAY hit a leadoff single in the second, then an error put runners on the corners, and
JETT GARCIA drove in Murray on a fielder's choice out at second.
Both teams went down in order the next few innings until
JOSH GRAHAM hit a two-out single in the top of the fifth, and Texas A&M International scored two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Cervantes and J. Cruz.
Murray cut the deficit to 6-4 with a two-run home run in the seven, driving in
RYAN FEDDERSEN, who reached on a walk. The Hilltoppers loaded the bases but left all three runners stranded.
Texas A&M International scored another run in the seventh while Cruz grounded into a double play, putting the Dustdevils one run out from Drewek's two-run blast in the bottom of the ninth.
LANCE LITTLE and
DILLON FLORES popped out to end the game.
JOSH GRAHAM came off the bench to hit 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Drewek hit 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Murray was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
St. Edward's wraps up the regular season with a 23-27 record, including 23-25 in conference play. The LSC Tournament begins next weekend.
