DENVER – MIA RIVERA broke the St. Edward's women's cross country 6K record, and the team's top three runners set personal bests to lead the Hilltoppers to a sixth-place finish at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by MSU-Denver.
"It was a tremendous effort by our women this morning," St. Edward's Head Cross Country Coach Steven Cary says. "We ran competitively from the moment the race started, and I love it."
Running for the second consecutive weekend and despite running at mile-high altitude, Rivera broke Faith Brother's 2021 record of 22:36.4 with a time of 22:35.4 to place 20th.
JENNA SAUNDERS and
DELANEY LONG also set new personal records at 23:20.8 and 23:40.8 to place 40th and 56th.
"I'm super happy about Mia breaking the school record. She competed hard and still has more in the tank. We're just getting started," Cary exclaims. "A couple of others that stand out to me are Jenna and Delaney. They both ran the best races of their careers this morning, and their progression has been fun to watch."
JULIANA MERLO and
MYLA CASTILLO rounded out St. Edward's top five at 23:45.4 and 24:25.1, finishing 61st and 78th.
SYDNEY SMITH (88th, 24:46.0),
LILYANA CASTRO (92nd, 24:52.6), and
VICTORIA HOYT (100th, 25:11.2) also competed.
"It'll be good to get some folks fully healthy this week," Cary says. "I'm excited to see what this group will do at DBU in a couple weeks."
St. Edward's will compete at the Dallas Baptist University Old Glory Gallop on Saturday, October 5. The event will be held in Lynn Creek Park.
