ALPINE, Texas – St. Edward's volleyball compounded a season-high 27 attack errors with nin service errors in a four-set loss to the Sul Ross State Lobos.
In the first set, Sul Ross State directed the bulk of its attack through Natalie Hernandez and Cassandra Espinoza. The duo combined for 14 kills and 35 of the team's 43 attacks. St. Edward's setter
ALTHEA MORRIS distributed the Hilltoppers' touches more evenly, getting four kills from
KAT NEILLE and three each from
MIA CLAY and
KELLI FORDING to take the set 25-23.
Sul Ross found more balance in the second set, getting multiple kills from five players, led by Espinoza's four. More importantly, the Lobos stifled the Hilltopper attack, limiting St. Edward's to .093 hitting in the 25-20 win. The Lobos hit .390 in the third set to extend its lead with a 25-19 win to take the lead.
MIA CLAY,
KAYLEN LEMBCKE, and Addey Badley came to life in the fourth set, combining for 12 kills on 26 attacks. The Hilltoppers had an 18-13 kill advantage in the set. However, the Hilltoppers committed eight attack errors and three service errors in the 25-23 loss.
Badley led St. Edward's with 12 kills on a .370 clip. Clay added 11 kills on .250 hitting, and
LANDRY BAUGHMAN had 10. Morris finished with 54 assists, and
BEA ANGELES posted 19 digs.
St. Edward's drops to 8-5 with a 0-2 conference record. The Hilltoppers will host Cameron and Oklahoma Christian on Friday and Saturday next week.
