DALLAS – St. Edward's men's basketball made a late surge against No. 8-ranked Dallas Baptist, cutting the Patriot lead to seven on a jumper from
MASON COURTNEY, but DBU closed the game with a 15-4 run for the 94-76 win.
The Hilltopper frontcourt of
JAMISON KAY and
LEWIS ROWE combined for 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting, but the Hilltoppers were outscored 45-27 from the 3-point line, surrendering seven made 3-pointers to Drew Calderon on 14 attempts.
St. Edward's struggled from deep in the first half, shooting just 2-for-12 from deep, while Stevens led Dallas Baptist in scoring with nine points, shooting 3-for-6 from the 3-point line.
JAMISON KAY led the Hilltoppers with seven first-half points, and
CONOR MCMANUS hit both Hilltopper 3-pointers on four attempts.
Dallas Baptist showcased its depth early, outscoring St. Edward's 28-8 in bench points in the first half to lead 46-29 at the break.
St. Edward's found its offensive rhythm in the second half, shooting 7-for-12 from long distance and 12-for-15 from the free-throw line.
LUCA BAREI sparked St. Edward's with 3-for-3 shooting from deep,
LUKE KISER added another pair of 3-pointers, and Rowe and Kay each hit one.
Dallas Baptist opened up a 14-point lead on a pair of free throws from Cameron Kahn midway through the second half for the 72-58 lead.
Barei and Rowe each hit a 3-pointer, and the Hilltoppers slowly climbed back into the game, pulling to within seven on Courtney's jumper with 4:55 remaining, but Dallas Baptist responded 1with four 3-pointers down the stretch to extend the lead back to 18.
Kay scored 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Dallas Baptist managed to keep the ball out of Rowe's hands, but the Australian center made the most of his attempts, scoring 11 on 4-for-5 shooting. Mason and Barei each scored nine. Drew Calderon led DBU with 23 points in 8-for-16 shooting, and Ricky Lujan scored 15 with seven assists.
St. Edward's drops to 10-7 with a 4-4 conference record. The Hilltoppers will hit the road again next week with games at Oklahoma Christian and Cameron University.
