EDMOND, Okla. – MIKAH CHAPMAN packed endless energy into 24 minutes,
BAILEY FEATHERSTONE delivered a big second-half performance, and St. Edward's women's basketball got back into the win column with a 65-61 victory over Oklahoma Christian.
Chapman was everywhere on the court, recording her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The junior forward hit an efficient 7-for-11 from the field with two blocks and steals before fouling out of the game in the fourth.
Featherstone scored 15 points off the bench and was aggressive, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Chapman set the tone in the first quarter, relentlessly pursuing the ball for eight rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. She led the Hilltoppers with six points on 3-for-5 shooting. Featherstone added four off the bench, and
ISABEL LANGENBERG hit a 3-pointer to give St. Edward's a 13-10 lead.
The momentum carried over into the start of the second. Chapman hit a short jumper, followed by J.P. finding
JASMYN JACKSON for a short jumper. Oklahoma Christian stopped the run with a Kate Bradley 3-pointer off an offensive rebound, but
RAMSEY ROBLEDO responded with her long-distance jumper to go back up seven.
Oklahoma Christian found its footing offensively from the free-throw line, reeling off an 11-0 run with five free throws over the next few minutes to take a four-point lead before
RILEY MOORE found Jackson for a layup just before halftime to cut the Hilltoppers' deficit to 27-25.
The Eagles opened the second half on a 7-0 run for its largest lead at 34-25 less than two minutes in. Bradley hit a 3-pointer, then Ciara Harris found Francisco for a layup, stole the ball, and hit Bradley for a fastbreak layup, prompting a St. Edward's timeout.
St. Edward's picked up its energy after the timeout to get back into the game. J.P. scored on a driving layup, allowing the fullcourt defense to set. Chapman took the ball from Bradley and found
KIANA BENNETT for a fastbreak layup.
Oklahoma Christian halted the run with a pair of Bradley free throws. Chapman hit a short baseline jumper off a feed from J.P., then Langenberg picked off a pass, and J.P. found Chapman for another layup to cut the lead to 36-33 midway through the third.
J.P. had to leave the game with her fourth foul, and Harris and Bradley got free for a combined 19 points in the third, but Robledo steadied St. Edward's with a critical 3-pointer to stop an Oklahoma Christian run. Langenberg did the same with a layup through contact and free throw, and Featherstone scored four off the bench to keep St. Edward's to within 48-45 heading into the fourth.
St. Edward's got contributions from everyone in a stellar defensive fourth quarter, limiting the Eagles to 4-for-18 shooting.
Featherstone opened the fourth with a layup, then answered a 3-pointer with a made free throw.
RILEY MOORE found Jackson for a layup, then hit a fastbreak 3-pointer from the wing off a steal and feed from Bennett to give St. Edward's the lead.
After Kendall Brown hit a free throw, St. Edward's reeled off a 7-0 run. Featherstone drove in for a layup, Langenberg hit a pull-up jumper from the elbow, and Featherstone found Bennett cutting baseline for a layup and foul for the 3-point play to go up 60-52.
Chapman entered the game and scored a critical bucket before fouling out, and Featherstone kept the Eagles at bay, scoring seven points in the fourth, hitting 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
Featherstone led the second unit, which outscored the Eagles 29-4 in bench points. Jackson was valuable, scoring eight points on 4-for-7 shooting, grabbing four rebounds, and recording a block and steal in 18 minutes.
St. Edward's improves to 7-11 with a 3-6 conference record. The Hilltoppers will remain on the road and play Cameron on Saturday.
