This Week at the Hilltop, Basketball Returns Home and Track Goes to Houston

| By:
This Week at the Hilltop, St. Edward's men's and women's basketball host Texas Permian Basin and Angelo State. Indoor Track & Field travels to Houston to compete in the FasTrak Athletix Collegiate Challenge.

Women's Basketball (8-11, 4-6)

St. Edward's returns home after a successful road trip, picking up wins over Oklahoma Christian and Cameron. The women's basketball team was bolstered by its bench, which put together solid back-to-back performances anchored by BAILEY FEATHERSTONE

Featherstone was a crucial source of shot creation for the second unit, averaging 15 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. First-year backup point guard RILEY MOORE also provided steady play in the second half against Oklahoma Christian and Cameron. Jasymn Jackson stepped up with AINSLEY THUNELL out, and ISABEL LANGENBERG hit big shots against the Aggies.

The depth helped lighten the load on J.P., who averaged 12 points and five assists per game despite foul trouble.

Texas Permian Basin (9-8, 7-4)
Texas Permian Basin is coming off a four-game homestand, losing three of four. The Falcons are led by fifth-year guard Taysha Rushton, averaging 15.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

UTPB succeeds by winning the turnover battle. It takes care of the ball while forcing turnovers at the second-best rate in the conference and ramping up its 3-point volume, which it converts at an average rate. However, the emphasis on turnovers comes at the expense of its field goal percentage defense and defensive rebounding.

Angelo State (13-4, 9-2)
Nationally-ranked Lubbock Christian snapped Angelo State's 11-game winning streak over the weekend. That loss and an early-season loss to Texas Permian Basin account for the only two conference Rambelle losses this season.

The Rambelles feature a balanced attack with four players averaging double figures, led by Majik Esquivel's 13.2 points per game. Nearly half of her 81 made field goals have come from behind the 3-point line, where she converts at a 33.6 percent clip.

The frontcourt of Madeline Stephens and Keniah Williams are averaging just shy of a double-double each. The duo help anchor a defense that ranks near the top of the conference in blocks, defensive rebounding, and field-goal percentage defense.

Men's Basketball (11-8, 5-5)
The men's basketball team split its games in Oklahoma, fading down the stretch against Oklahoma Christian and blowing out Cameron.
GAVINO RAMOS regained some rhythm offensively, leading the team with 19 points per game on 51.6 percent shooting last week. The Hilltoppers' senior point guard recorded 13 assists to just two turnovers. CONOR MCMANUS remains a defensive playmaker, recording four blocks and steals the previous week while averaging 12.5 points on 42.9 percent from deep.

Texas Permian Basin (12-5, 8-3)
Texas Permian Basin is coming off back-to-back overtime losses at home in the difficult Lubbock Christian and Midwestern State week.

Five Falcons players average double figures, led by Alex Matthews' 16.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-5 senior forward shoots 50 percent from the field and leads the LSC in free throws, converting 82 percent of his attempts.

Center Dario Domingos supports Matthews with an efficient second option, averaging 14.8 points per game on 61.1 percent shooting. Texas Permian Basin is in the back half of the LSC in assists, 3-pointers, and rebounds per game but offsets that with free-throw volume and ball control.

Angelo State (11-6, 7-4)
Angelo State is coming off a stellar week, sweeping Midwestern State and  Lubbock Christian. The Rams are led by senior guard Sterling Gaston-Chapman, averaging 13.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 46 percent from deep.

The Rams are one of the stingiest defenses in the conference, limiting opponents to the fewest points and third-best field-goal percentage defense, doing especially well to defend the 3-point line.

Track & Field
St. Edward's competes in the third meet of its inaugural season. Last week, the Hilltoppers sent a small contingent of its sprinters and hurdlers to Oklahoma to compete in the Owen Hewett Invitational. More of its roster will be available in Houston for the FasTrak Athletix Collegiate Challenge. Live results will be available here.
