AUSTIN, Texas – DYLAN TATE drove in four RBI, scoring three runs, and seven different pitchers combined for an eight-inning shutout in No. 23-ranked St. Edward's baseball's 9-0 win over the Huston-Tillotson Rams.
MARLEY BERNAL (2-0) started on the mound for St. Edward's and was stellar in three innings, retiring nine of 10 hitters with four strikeouts, no walks, and only one hit surrendered in the win.
Travis Chesnut drew a one-out walk and manufactured a run with his speed and some control issues from Huston-Tillotson starter Ethan Walker. Chesnut took second on a wild pitch, then stole third, setting up a
CONNOR COX RBI on a groundout.
MARCO BARRERA hit a leadoff single up the middle, and Tate drove him in with a two-run blast for his first home run of the season.
Cox hit a leadoff single to right-center in the third, and Huston-Tillotson reliever Rece Houghton gifted St. Edward's a run with three consecutive walks, giving Tate another RBI.
Cullen Lee replaced Houghton, and
DIEGO SOLIS drove in a run on a groundout. Lee walked
GRAYSON THALLMAN to load the bases, and
TREVOR SEBEK surprised the defense by bunting for a single, scoring Tate.
JAKUB RAYFIELD started the fourth and retired three of five, surrendering a leadoff single and walk.
LIAM MILLER took the fifth and struck out two and walked one.
QUINTEN ESTRADA took the sixth and surrendered two singles but struck out two and escaped unscathed.
A pitch hit Cox to start the sixth, Barrera moved him over with a one-out double to right-center, and Tate plated both of them with an RBI single up the middle. Tate stole second and third, and
DANIEL RIPPLE pinch-hit for Solis and hit a sac fly to right field for the 9-0 lead.
St. Edward's cleared its bench defensively in the seventh, and
FINN MIGNEREY retired three of four. St. Edward's loaded the bases in the seventh with an opportunity for the walk-off run but grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Drizzle turned into rain between the seventh and eighth, and field conditions deteriorated rapidly. The umpired called the game after Huston-Tillotson's Kendall Brown's swing ended with his bat flying into the home dugout.
Tate hit 2-for-2 with two walks, Cox was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Barrera hit 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
St. Edward's improves to 10-3 and will travel to Odessa, Texas, this weekend to play Texas Permian Basin.
