Men's Track & Field Sets Several Personal Bests at LSC Championships

| By:
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – St. Edward's men's track & field wrapped up its first indoor season at the Lone Star Conference Championships, setting several personal bests in its inaugural season.

"We did some good things this weekend," St. Edward's Head Track & Field Coach Steven Cary says. "It took a lot to get our program here for our first indoor conference championship, but I'm so glad the guys got to experience it this weekend."

HOGAN HEIKKINEN carried a heavy workload for St. Edward's, just missing the cut in the 800 prelims with a personal-best 1:54.16 on Friday, finishing fourth in his heat and 10th overall. He also competed alongside CRISTIAN MENDOZA, WILLIE ODEM, and AJ PENA in the distance medley relay. The quartet placed eighth at 11:00.50. On Saturday, he ran a 4:28.83 mile, placing 10th, and AJ PENA followed in 12th at 4:33.47.

"Hogan pulled off a hard triple with the 800, DMR, and mile but handled it like a champ. He fought hard for the results he got and gave us a glimpse of what's to come in his young career," Cary says. "Ben and Arlo also fought hard and performed well in the 5K. Both of them ran smart races and were in position to score points the entire race."

Ben Bayly and ARLO GONZALES earned to–10 finishes in the 5K. Bayly led St. Edward's with a seventh-place finish at 15:38.64, and Gonzales followed immediately after in eighth at 15:45.94. WILLIAM SULENTICH finished in 15th at 16:39.90.

JORDON CHAPPELL and TYRIQ WILSON competed in the 200-meter dash, placing 11th and 14th, respectively. Chappell clocked a personal-best 21.81, and Wilson finished 21.88.

DAVID MARQUEZ jumped a distance of 6.03 meters in the long jump, placing 19th. ISAAC KIM clocked a tie of 8.85 in the 60-meter hurdles prelims. Chappell was 11th in the 400-dash preliminaries, placing 11th with a personal best of 48.64.

On Saturday, Marquez placed 13th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.85 meters, and MARCUS AGUINALDO, Chappell, CRISTIAN MENDOZA, and Wilson placed seventh in the 4x400 relay at 3:17.67.

"It was great to see our 4x400 relay team perform at a high level, too. We're getting closer to our potential now, which is exciting," Cary says. "We set a lot of season and personal bests across all events. Everyone performed their best, which you want at a championship meet."

St. Edward's will immediately turn its attention to the outdoor track & field season, opening March 1 in Georgetown, Texas, with the Southwestern Opener.
