Baseball Shutout in Doubleheader Against ENMU

Portales, N.M. – St. Edward's baseball was shutout two games against Eastern New Mexico University to fall behind 2-1 in the four-game series against the Greyhounds. 
 
Game 1: Eastern New Mexico 5, St. Edward's 0
 
Less than 24 hours after posting a season-high 18 hits, St. Edward's was limited to its lowest output in a 5-0 loss to Eastern New Mexico University. 
 
Eastern New Mexico starter Nick Mooney pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out five with four walks and only three hits surrendered. 
 
The Greyhounds put the first run on the scoreboard in the second inning. St. Edward's starter, GEORGE HETTRICK, surrendered a one-out single, walked one hitter, then hit another to load the bases. Hettrick recovered to strikeout Kyle Kiernan but walked Luciano Terilli to score a run before catching Jalen Freeman looking to end the inning. Cortese added another run for ENMU with a leadoff blast in the bottom of the third. 
 
Both teams went scoreless the next few innings until Willie Ponce hit a three-run blast off St. Edward's reliever LIAM MILLER in the sixth. St. Edward's loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but TRAVIS CHESTNUT flied out to center field to end the game. 
 
TREVOR SEBEK, CARLO FIGUEROA, and CONNOR COX accounted for St. Edward's three hits. Hettrick went four innings, struck out four with three walks, hit two batters, and surrendered four hits and two runs. Miller went two innings, surrendered three hits, two walks, and struck out one. 
 
Game 2: Eastern New Mexico 7, St. Edward's 0
 
St. Edward's was shutout for a second consecutive game and committed three errors in a 7-0 loss to Eastern New Mexico. 
 
Starting pitcher JAKUB RAYFIELD surrendered back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first. Cortese grounded into a fielder's choice with the force out at third, but Sebek made a throwing error on the double play attempt, and Ponce drove him in with a bunt for a single. 
 
St. Edward's put two on in the second but left them stranded, then went down in order in the third. Barrera hit a leadoff single in the fourth but was caught stealing. KHAMANI BLAKNEY followed with a single and was left stranded.
 
Rayfield surrendered four runs on four hits in the fourth. Eastern New Mexico got RBI singles from Martin and Kiernan and a two-RBI single from Terilli. QUINTEN ESTRADA replaced Rayfield to start the fifth and surrendered two more runs.
 
Blakney hit 2-for-2 with a walk, and MARCO BARRERA and DYLAN TATE were 1-for-3. Rayfield went four innings with seven hits, five runs, and two walks surrendered. Estrada surrendered three hits and two runs in an inning. FINN MIGNEREY retired the side in order in the final inning. St. Edward's will attempt to split the series in the final game tomorrow.
