AUSTIN, Texas – Texas-Tyler starter Kyle Froehlich turned in a complete-game shutout and the No. 5-ranked Patriots bounced back from a Friday loss with a 7-0 victory to even the series against No. 15 St. Edward's in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
GEORGE HETTRICK was solid on the mound for St. Edward's in 5.1 innings, exiting the game with a 3-0 deficit and two runners on in the fifth.
Hettrick relentlessly pounded the outside corner to keep the ball out of the Patriots' power alleys. The tradeoff cost back-to-back hitters reaching on 1-2 counts with an opposite field single and a walk, but kept the ball in play for the 6-4-3 inning-ending double play in the first inning.
After Hettrick got Ethan Menard to chase a pitch on the outside to open the second inning with a strikeout, Drew Schmidt adjusted with an opposite field double to deep right center to bring the top of the lineup back around.
Hettrick kept leadoff hitter Connor Clark looking to the outside corner, then busted him inside for a strikeout looking. However, Tanner Hornback and Bryce Jewell turned on inside pitches, pulling them for an RBI double and single, striking first for the 2-0 lead.
CARLO FIGUEROA opened the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double. After going hitless on Friday while batting into an extreme defensive shift, Figueroa adjusted with the opposite field shot to the fence in right-center.
MARCO BARRERA moved him to third with a groundout, but UT Tyler starter Kyle Froehlich retired the next two hitters with a shallow pop fly and strikeout to strand Figueroa.
UT Tyler added another run in the fifth, doing all the damage with two outs. Cade Conway started with a single to left field, and Justin Williams ripped an RBI double into left center before Blake Labuda popped up to end the inning.
Hettrick surrendered two singles and a sacrifice bunt to start the sixth, prompting St. Edward's to turn to
BRENNAN BERDON out of the bullpen. Hornback and Jewell greeted him with back-to-back home runs to left field, extending the lead to 7-0, with three runs attributed to Hettrick.
St. Edward's was limited to five hits, all by different hitters, and grounded into two inning-ending double plays.
