AUSTIN, Texas – Texas-Tyler did most of its damage with two outs, defeating St. Edward's 5-2 to sweep Saturday's doubleheader.
The first two Patriots drove the ball to the fence, where left fielder
GRAYSON THALLMAN greeted the ball for two quick outs. After
JAKUB RAYFIELD surrendered two walks, Drew Schmidt drove a third ball to the fence. This time, Thallman couldn't come away with the out, making the leaping play on the wall to keep the ball in play for a two-RBI triple instead of a home run.
Cade Conway added a third run in the second, hitting a single through the right side with two outs to drive in Tanner Hornback, who reached on a single.
Justin Williams opened the fifth with a leadoff single through the left side, and Ethan Menard drove him in with an RBI double. Bo Willis scored Menard with an RBI single to left-center.
DIEGO SOLIS and
NICHOLAS ANDERSON opened the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles.
GRAYSON THALLMAN moved them over with a groundout, and
TREVOR SEBEK hit a two-RBI single to right-center for St. Ed's first run of the day.
St. Edward's loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and Thallman hit a chopper down the first-base line, but Bryce Jewell made a good play on it and closed the inning with three runners stranded.
MARCO BARRERA and Solis each hit 2-for-3. Sebek,
TRAVIS CHESTNUT,
CARLO FIGUEROA, and Andreson each had a hit. St. Edward's drops to 15-5 with a 14-4 conference record and will look to split the series with a final game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
