SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's rallied with two runs in the seventh and ninth innings before delivering a walk-off single in the 10th to defeat the No. 15-ranked St. Edward's baseball team 6-5 to open the four-game Battle of the Saints series.
TRAVIS CHESTNUT was responsible for all five Hilltopper runs, hitting 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs to drive in five RBI, finishing with his eighth home run and 32nd RBI of the season.
CONNOR COX and
LANCE LITTLE hit back-to-back singles through the left side in the fourth, and Chestnut ripped the three-run blast to left field for the lead. Easton Parrish responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning for the 3-1 score.
Chestnut pulled another frozen rope to left-center in the sixth, driving in Little with a two-run home run for the 5-1 lead. Parrish went yard again in the seventh, and Raithen Malone added another home run later in the inning to pull within two at 5-3.
St. Edward's turned to
PARKER TENNILL out of the bullpen to start the eighth, getting the circuitous three-up, three-down inning with a 4-6-3 double play.
St. Mary's recorded three hits in the bottom of the ninth, tying the game on Jake Elizondo's RBI single to right field. St. Edward's left two stranded in the 10th, and Jaxon Daigre delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the inning.
Cox hit 3-for-5 with a run scored, and Little,
MARCO BARRERA, and
CARLO FIGUEROA each had a hit.
KOBE JARAMILLO started on the mound and went seven innings, striking out eight with three runs surrendered on six hits and a walk.
St. Edward's drops to 22-9 with a 21-8 conference record. The Hilltoppers and Rattlers will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
