SAN ANTONIO – St. Edward's baseball team struggled at the plate and surrendered a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, resulting in a 3-0 loss to St. Mary's in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, falling behind 2-0 in the four-game series.
Both starting pitchers went the distance in a solid duel between St. Edward's
GEORGE HETTRICK (L, 4-3) and St. Mary's Kaleb Guana (W, 3-3). Hettrick surrendered nine hits, struck out three, and walked two, while Guana carried a no-hitter into the final inning with seven strikeouts, no walks, and only two hits surrendered.
CONNOR COX reached on an error in the first, and Guana hit
TRAVIS CHESTNUT in the second, representing St. Edward's only base runners until the seventh. Chestnut stole second and third, but the Hilltoppers' most promising threat ended with a pop-up to second.
Easton Parrish drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hettrick retired the first two hitters, striking out Dillon Lopez, before surrendering a single to Garrett Brooks and walking Jacob King. Parrish drove the first pitch to center field to plate the first run.
Brendan Concannon hit a leadoff single to center in the fifth, and St. Mary's turned that into the second run with a sacrifice bunt to move him into scoring position and an RBI double down the left-field line from Lopez. Heller added the third run in the sixth on an RBI single through the left side.
LANCE LITTLE hit a one-out single up the middle to break up the no-hitter. After
MARCO BARRERA grounded into a fielder's choice out at second, Chestnut singled to center field to put the tying run at the plate, but
CARLO FIGUEROA flied out to right-center to end the game.
