SAN ANTONIO – CONNOR COX and
LANCE LITTLE combined to hit 9-for-10 with eight RBI and four runs scored to lead St. Edward's to bounce back with an 11-1 win over St. Mary's in the second game of the doubleheader.
St. Edward's tweaked its lineup after struggling to score runs in the first two games, shifting
TRAVIS CHESTNUT back to the leadoff hitter and moving Cox and Little up to second and third with
MARCO BARRERA in the cleanup spot.
DIEGO SOLIS started behind the plate, and shortstop
MARCO GONZALES made his collegiate debut, moving
CARLO FIGUEROA to short.
The moves paid dividends early with a three-run second inning. Solis sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff double and later scored on Cox's RBI infield single. Little followed with an RBI single, driving a full-count pitch to center field to put runners on first and third. Cox then scored on a wild pitch.
St. Mary's put two on with one out in the second off starter
MARLEY BERNAL, who left with an injury after walking Concannon.
JAKUB RAYFIELD replaced him and surrendered an RBI single, with the run attributed to Bernal, before getting out of the inning. Rayfield (W, 3-3) was solid in the win, going 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and only two hits and a walk allowed.
Cox and Little hit back-to-back singles in the fourth. Cox singled through the right side, then advanced on a balk, setting up Little's RBI single.
Figueroa opened a seven-run fifth inning with a standup triple to left-center, then scored on Solis's single to center. Relief pitcher B. Vasquez walked
TREVOR SEBEK and hit Gonzales to load the bases, then walked Chestnut to plate a run.
Cox followed with a frozen rope down the right-field line that cleared the fence for a grand slam, and Little rocketed one to left field for back-to-back home runs and the 11-1 lead.
Little finished 5-for-5 with three RBI and a run. Cox hit 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Solis continues to make strides returning from injury, hitting 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
St. Edward's improves to 23-10 with the win, including 22-9 in conference play. The Hilltoppers look to split the series in tomorrow's finale at 1:00 p.m.
