SAN MARCOS, Texas – TYRIQ WILSON led St. Edward's men's track and field at the Charles Austin Classic hosted by Texas State University with two new school records on a day the Hilltoppers set new personal bests up and down the lineup.
"What a strong weekend for the guys," St. Edward's Head Track & Field Coach Steven Cary says. "They all competed well out there. Everyone leveled up, even though it was a smaller meet."
Wilson became the first Hilltopper in the modern era to break 11 seconds in the 100 with a school-record 10.81 to finish eighth. It's the eighth-best time in the Lone Star Conference this season.
ANDRE MOORE and
CRISTIAN MENDOZA followed in 12th and 14th with new personal standards of 11.05 and 11.22.
St. Edward's junior sprinter also set a school record in the 200 at 21.30, placing fifth. Wilson's new mark is the fourth-best time in the LSC, beating his previous record of 21.59 set during the 2023 LSC Championships.
JORDON CHAPPELL gave St. Edward's another top-10 finish at 21.67, placing eighth, and Moore clocked a 22.22 to finish 14th. Both times were personal bests. Chappell also placed sixth in the 400 at 49.34, good for eighth in the LSC.
WILLIE ODEM and
AJ PENA placed fifth and sixth in the 800 at 1:58.17 and 1:59.18, with Pena setting a new personal record. Freshman
ARLO GONZALES led St. Edward's in the 5K with a fourth-place finish of 15:22.93, good for seventh in the LSC.
"We've been challenging everyone to show up every time they step out on the track and to not wait until May to elevate their performance," Cary says. "I feel like the guys are starting to get it, and it's fun to watch."
St. Edward's will return to Texas State next weekend to compete in the Bobcat Invitational.
