St. Edward's Overpowers Lubbock Christian To Sweep Doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – CONNOR COX was perfect at the plate through two games, and St. Edward's baseball overpowered Lubbock Christian with four home runs and 23 total runs scored to sweep Sunday's doubleheader against the Chaparrals.

Game 1: St. Edward's 5, Lubbock Christian 3
Cox and MARCO BARRERA hit solo blasts in the fifth inning, starting pitcher GEORGE HETTRICK kept the nation's fifth-most potent offense scoreless for six innings, and PARKER TENNILL came up clutch with the save in a 5-3 victory.

St. Edward's loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first on two walks and a Cox double, scoring on Barrera's sacrifice fly to left field. Lubbock Christian starter Ryan Markwardt mitigated the damage with consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

CARLO FIGUEROA and NICHOLAS ANDERSON drew back-to-back walks in the second. St. Edward's scored two runs on TRAVIS CHESTNUT's RBI single, with the second run scored on catcher Ryan Blackwell's overthrow to third, attempting to throw out Anderson at third after Figueroa beat the throw to the plate.

Cox hit a one-out home run to left field in the fifth, then Barrera hit a solo blast to right field for the 5-0 lead.

Hettrick surrendered doubles in the second and third innings but recovered each time to keep the Chaps off the scoreboard. Brock Tijerina hit a leadoff single in the fifth, but St. Edward's immediately turned a double play on its way to the circuitous 1-2-3 inning.

Lubbock Christian hit a leadoff single and drew a walk to open the sixth, then moved both runners over on a groundout to first. Hettrick followed with a critical strikeout, fanning pinch-hitter Roe Forrest and getting Adam Garcia to fly out to right field to end the inning.

Hettrick surrendered two walks, a double, and a Brevin McCool RBI single in the seventh, exiting the game with bases loaded and one out. Nicklaus Baumbach greeted Tennill with a two-RBI single to center field, but Tennill struck out Tijerina and Forrest to earn his ninth save.

St. Edward's got a combined 4-for-7 with four RBI, three walks, and three runs scored from the top four hitters in its lineup. Cox hit 2-for-2 with a double and home run.

Game 2: St. Edward's 18, Lubbock Christian 11
Lubbock Christian intentionally walked Cox in the bottom of the sixth, choosing to load the bases for LANCE LITTLE instead of the prospect of Cox hitting a fifth consecutive double.

Little made the Chaparrals pay with a grand slam, highlighting a nine-run inning on St. Edward's way to an 18-11 victory over Lubbock Christian. The moment crystalized the potential of the potent Hilltopper lineup, getting two home runs, six doubles, and a triple.
The Chaps struck first, scoring on an RBI double from Baumbach, then a three-run blast from Johnny Gomez III for a 4-0 lead.

Cox responded with an RBI double to left-center in the bottom of the inning, followed by an RBI single from DIEGO SOLIS and a sacrifice fly from Figueroa. Cox pushed St. Edward's ahead with a two-RBI double to center field in the second, followed by an RBI single from Solis, a two-RBI triple from Figueroa, and an RBI infield single from DYLAN TATE for the 9-4 lead.

Baumbach hit a solo blast in the third, and Lubbock Christian added two more runs on back-to-back doubles from Bowen and McCool in the fourth as St. Edward's bats went silent for several innings.

Tennill replaced JAKUB RAYFIELD in the fourth and kept Lubbock Christian scoreless until McCool tied the game on a two-run home run off the scoreboard in the sixth.

Barrera hit a leadoff double in the sixth, then a pitch hit Solis, and both advanced on a wild pitch. Barrera scored on a balk to retake the lead.

Figueroa and Tate drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, then a pitch hit a pinch-hitting JAKE WILEY to score Solis, Chestnut hit a sac fly, and the Chaps intentionally walked Cox, setting up Little's grand slam for the 16-9 lead. After a pitch hit Barrera, Solis hit a two-run blast.

Frayner Chavez hit a two-run home run in the seventh before Tennill retired the next three Chaps to pick up the win.

Cox and Barrera were both perfect at the plate. Cox hit 4-for-4 with three RBI, three runs, two walks, and four doubles.  Barrera hit 3-for-3 with three runs. Solis finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs.

Cox ended the day 6-for-6 with five doubles and a home run, driving in four RBI, scoring four runs, and posting a 2.333 slugging percentage. Barrera and Solis combined for six RBI and seven runs, recording a better than 1.000 slugging percentage.

St. Edward's improves to 26-11 with a 25-10 conference record, taking a 2-1 series lead. The Hilltoppers and Chaps will finish the series tomorrow.
