AUSTIN, Texas – Seniors
DIEGO SOLIS and
JOSH GRAHAM both hit two-run blasts, and
LIAM MILLER and
DYLAN TATE stabilized the bullpen long enough to allow St. Edward's to pull away with a 15-12 win over Texas A&M International to take the season series 3-1.
Graham was called on to pinch-hit during Saturday's 9-2 victory and came through with a two-RBI single in the fifth inning. Rewarded with the start on Senior Day, Graham delivered a memorable performance, hitting 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. He also delivered several key defensive plays at shortstop.
Texas A&M International struck first, putting up two runs in the second inning. Ciro Benavides drove in the first run on a sacrifice bunt, and JC Zepeda added another RBI with a triple to center field.
DAVID RIPPLE picked up where he left off from his first two starts, delivering a leadoff single through the left side. Solis followed with a towering shot to left field to tie the game with his third home run this season.
Graham ripped a single to left-center,
TREVOR SEBEK bunted for a single, and
TRAVIS CHESTNUT gave St. Edward's the lead with an RBI single to left field.
CONNOR COX added the first of four RBIs on the day with a sac fly to the wall in the center field.
St. Edward's picked up two quick outs in the third, but Alex Lugo hit a double to right field and starter
CARSON BLAKELEY walked Abiam Medina and Omar Cervantes to load the bases for Eddie Saenz's grand slam and a 6-4 Dustdevil lead.
Danny Dial came out of the bullpen to start the third for TAMIU and struggled, hitting
MARCO BARRERA, walking two, surrendering a double, and allowing a run on a wild pitch before exiting. Michael Ramos replaced him and got one out, but Sebek hit an RBI single to center, Cox drove a three-RBI double into left-center, and
LANCE LITTLE hit an RBI double into right for the 10-6 lead.
Blakeley surrendered a leadoff double, a wild pitch, and hit Zepeda to start the fourth, exiting for
NIC LUNA. Alan Vielma hit an RBI double to left and Cruz tied the game with a three-run blast before Luna retired hte next three.
Graham responded with a two-run blast that exploded off his bat, reclaiming the lead. Haziel Cruz tied the game in the fifth with a two-RBI double to left field, but was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple. St. Edward's turned to
LIAM MILLER out of the bullpen, who finally shut the Dustdevils down.
Miller went 3.2 innings allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out four. The 6-foot-6 left-handed pitcher brought a different arm angle and delivery that befuddled TAMIU hitters, dropping pitches into the strikezone at the last second to strikeout out three Dustdevils looking.
Tate made came out of the bullpen to start the ninth and was just as effective in a stylistically different way, pounding the strikeout with velocity to retire the side in order, overpowering Benavides with a high fastball for a strikeout.
Barrera put the Hilltoppers back on top with an RBI single in the fifth, and Sebek added an insurance run with an RBI bunt single in the sixth. Wiley added the final run with an RBI single to left in the eighth.
Cox and Sebek each posted three hits for St. Edward's. Cox posted a team-high four RBI and scored twice. Sebek had two RBI and scored twice. Ripple had two hits and two runs, and Graham and Solis were 2-for-4 with two RBI. Solis scored three times, and Graham had two runs.
St. Edward's improves to 21-15 with a 30-14 conference record. The Hilltoppers will travel this week to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville in a four-game series that begins Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
