KINGSVILLE, Texas – St. Edward's baseball opened its four-game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville with a depleted pitching staff and an 11-6 loss to the Javelinas.
Nine of St. Edward's 10 hits came from the top of its lineup, with three from leadoff hitter
TRAVIS CHESTNUT, and two each from
CONNOR COX,
LANCE LITTLE, and
MARCO BARRERA.
TREVOR SEBEK posted the other hit.
ULISES TOVAR got his first start in place of a resting
KOBE JARAMILLO and surrendered three runs in the first inning. Tovar surrendered a leadoff single and walked two to load the bases to set up Aguilar's sac fly to right field. Reyes followed with a two-RBI single.
Marco Barrero answered with a leadoff home run in the second, and Tovar walked two in the bottom of the inning, giving way to
BEN SMEDSHAMMER out of the bullpen to escape the inning unscathed.
Sebek and Chestnut reached on a one-out walk and an infield single in the third. Both scored on a two-RBI single down the right-field line from Cox to tie the game. Texas A&M-Kingsville loaded the bases again in the third on two singles and a walk, scoring on another sac fly to retake the lead.
Texas A&M-Kingsville exploded for three runs in the fourth, opening the inning with a double, RBI triple, and two-run blast from Hewitt for the 7-3 lead. Galvan and Endo added back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth, and the Javelinas scored two more in the seventh on a sac fly and an RBI triple.
St. Edward's strung together three runs on four hits in the ninth but left three stranded. Chestnut and Cox hit an RBI single and an RBI double consecutively, and Barrera added an RBI single through the left side before the Javelinas ended the game.
Cox drove in three RBI, and Barrera added two with two walks and a run scored. Chestnut scored twice. Baseball drops to 31-16 with a 30-15 record. The Hilltoppers and Javelinas will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 2:00 p.m.
