KINGSVILLE, Texas – St. Edward's baseball surrendered four runs in the bottom of the ninth, ending in a walk-off infield single from Vincent Sanchez with bases loaded in Texas A&M-Kingsville's 7-6 victory to clinch the 3-1 series win.
Carson Blakely gave St. Edward's five solid innings and change on the mound, striking out five with no walks, seven hits, and two runs surrendered.
LANCE LITTLE gave St. Edward's the early lead with a two-run blast to left field off Karson Shepherd in the first inning.
CONNOR COX added to it with a leadoff home run to center field in the third. The Javelinas turned to reliever Marco Martinez, who walked the bases loaded, then walked
TREVOR SEBEK to score a run for a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Blakely retired the first nine hitters before Texas A&M-Kingsville broke through with a leadoff single from Joshua Endo, followed by Maurice Martinez's RBI triple. Blakely and the Hilltopper defense recovered to retire the next three hitters, leaving Endo stranded at third.
Endo hit another leadoff single in the sixth. Blakely responded by striking out the next two Javelinas, but hit Nick Reyes and surrendered an RBI single to Jayden Martinez. The Hilltoppers turned to
DYLAN TATE out of the bullpen, who walked Sanchez, then struck out Damian Carreon to end the inning.
A fielding error extended St. Edward's at-bat in the seventh, and
TRAVIS CHESTNUT took advantage with an infield single with bases loaded, scoring
DIEGO SOLIS for the 5-2 lead.
Reyes hit a leadoff triple in the eighth and scored on Martinez's groundout to pull within 5-3, but Chestnut hit a two-out RBI single to left field to answer the run.
Texas A&M-Kingsville turned to two pinch hitters to start the ninth, ending in an out and a runner reaching on an error. Endo followed with a single, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch, setting up Maurice Martinez's RBI single through the left side. The Javelinas added another run on a passed ball, then tied the game on Easton Hewitt's RBI double to left-center.
JAKUB RAYFIELD replaced Tate and intentionally walked Reyes, then walked Martinez to load the bases, leading to Sanchez's walk-off infield single.
Little hit 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Chestnut and Sebek both posted two hits. Chestnut added two RBI and a run, and Sebek finished with an RBI and a run.
St. Edward's closes the regular season with a 32-18 record, including 31-17 in conference play. The Hilltoppers will have a week off before the Lone Star Conference Tournament begins.
