St. Edward's Men's Cross Country named
OMAR GUZMAN as its Cornerstone Award winner during Tuesday night's awards ceremony and end-of-year banquet, the Goatspy Awards.
The Cornerstone is a new St. Edward's Athletics award celebrating the career accomplishments of a student-athlete who elevated the program to new heights and defined an era of that program's history. The award considers a combination of three pillars: Individual accolades, team success, and intangible contributions.
Each program's head coach may nominate a student-athlete in any given year, and a committee must approve each nomination. Once a program presents a Cornerstone Award, it cannot use it again until the third year after.
Guzman led St. Edward's Men's Cross Country to the modern program's best season, pacing the Hilltoppers to match its best Lone Star Conference Championships and NCAA Regional finishes in program history, as well as the program's first regional rankings.
The four-year Hilltopper broke the program's 8K record at 24:05.5 during the Texas A&M Invitational, and is within fractions of a second in the 5K. Guzman also owns the track and field program record in the 10K at 30:50.90, setting it during the 2024 Trinity Invitational.
Guzman is also a 2024 All-Conference runner and LSC All-Academic Team selection and a USTFFCAA All-Academic Athlete, continuing the program's proud tradition of academic excellence. This year, Guzman and his brother, Ivan, presented their research at the American Chemical Society's Southwest Regional Meeting, hosted by Baylor University, and won an award for best oral presentation for the undergraduate panel.
