SAN ANGELO, Texas – St. Edward's baseball's Lone Star Conference Championships run ended with a pair of losses against host Angelo State on the final day. The Hilltoppers fell short of a conference championship but put themselves in an excellent position for a spot in the NCAA Regional.
St. Edward's struggled against Angelo State all-conference pitcher Nick Wilson in the first game, notching just one hit and a walk. The Hilltoppers also surrendered 13 hits and compounded their struggles with four errors, allowing six unearned runs in the 11-0 loss.
The Hilltoppers held an 8-4 lead going into the seventh inning of Game 2, but surrendered eight runs in the bottom of the inning for a 12-9 loss.
MARCO BARRERA put St. Edward's on the board first with a two-out, two-run blast in the third inning, driving in
LANCE LITTLE, who reached on a single.
Angelo State answered in the bottom of the inning when Justin Harris reached on an error and scored on Jacob Guerrero's RBI single up the middle. The Rams scored two in the fourth to take the lead. St. Edward's starter
CARSON BLAKELEY walked the leadoff hitter, exiting the game for
BEN SMEDSHAMMER out of the bullpen. Smedshammer walked Weston Valasek, and Blake Wilhoite moved both over with a sacrifice bunt. Harris and Ethan followed with back-to-back RBIs for the 3-2 lead.
TREVOR SEBEK sparked St. Edward's with a leadoff single up the middle to start the fifth.
CONNOR COX followed with a one-out single, then Little tied the game on an RBI single to center field. After Barrera drew a walk to load the bases,
CARLO FIGUEROA cleared them with a three-RBI double down the left-field line.
DIEGO SOLIS drew a walk, and Figueroa moved over on a wild pitch, and the Hilltoppers extended the lead to 8-3 with a double steal.
St. Edward's defense committed another error to open the fifth, leading to an unearned run on Valasek's RBI double.
Angelo State finally broke through against Smedshammer in the seventh, opening with a leadoff single, a hit batter, and Beck's RBI single down the right-field line. Valasek drove in another run with a sac fly, and Wilhoite moved runners over with a sac bunt for the second out.
Harris hit an RBI single into center field, and Flodstrom drew a walk, ending Smedshammer's day.
PARKER TENNILL took over, walked Guerrero, and surrendered a two-RBI single to Pendley, an RBI double to Tayten Tredaway, and a two-RBI single to Lane Hutchinson for the 12-8 lead.
St. Edward's top of the lineup loaded the bases to open the eighth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Clayton Broeder replaced Seth Foster on the mound and struck out the next three Hilltoppers to preserve the lead.
Cox added an RBI double to left field in the ninth, but Little popped up to end the game. Cox hit 4-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Little and Barrero posted two hits and two runs each, and combined for three RBIs.
St. Edward's drops to 36-21 and will wait for Sunday's NCAA Division II Selection Show, live streamed on
NCAA.com at 9:30 p.m. CT.
