AUSTIN, Texas — St. Edward's rode a blistering serving performance to a 3–1 win over UT-Dallas on Thursday night, finishing off the Comets 25-14, 12-25, 25-20, 25-14 at the Recreation and Athletic Center.
KELLI FORDING paced the Hilltoppers with 15 kills, while
ALTHEA MORRIS delivered six of the team's 17 service aces to keep UTD on its heels. St. Edward's improved to 2-2 overall, bouncing back from a rough second set with a dominant close. The 17 aces are tied for fifth-most in a four-set NCAA Division II match this season.
The Hilltoppers set the tone early, racing out to a comfortable first-set win behind a balanced attack from
DELANEY GREGORY and
KAT NEILLE, combining for eight kills. Morris set the tone with four service aces in the 25-14 first-set win.
UT-Dallas responded in the second, capitalizing on eight St. Edward's errors to even the match with a 25-12 rout.
Momentum swung back in the third when Fording posted six kills and Morris and
BRENNA HEFFRON served two aces each to reclaim control. The Hilltoppers carried that surge into the fourth set, where
LANDRY BAUGHMAN recorded five of her nine kills, finishing with a .412 hitting percentage.
St. Edward's hit .238 as a team and spread 43 assists across the offense, led by Morris's 40 assists. Defensively, libero
GISELLE OJEDA anchored the back row with 13 receptions and eight digs.
Jane Burkhardt's 11 kills and Laura See's 10 paced UT-Dallas, which fell to 2-7. The Comets held an 8–4 edge in blocks but couldn't overcome the Hilltoppers' serve-receive pressure. St. Edward's returns to action on Saturday to host Cameron at 1:00 p.m.
