ARLINGTON, Texas — The St. Edward's women's track and field team opened its outdoor campaign at the University of Texas Arlington Invitational the way it closed its indoor season, with freshman
BUSAYO SHOWEMIMO flying off the track and leaping off the pages of the Hilltoppers' record book, and showcasing newfound depth across the board.
Showemimo turned in a historic outdoor debut with three program records and a pair of podium finishes. The freshman began her day clocking a record 11.92 in the 100-meter dash, placing fifth, then immediately made her way to the triple jump, leaping into the record books and second place with a distance of 11.59 meters. She saved her best for last, breezing through the 200 in a school record 24.45 seconds and another second-place finish.
St. Edward's freshman leads a limited conference field in all three events early, with Angelo State, Dallas Baptist, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Cameron also competing this opening weekend.
Senior
JASMINE COOKE turned in another solid Hilltopper performance, clocking a personal-best 12.29, while freshmen
ADDISON CERVANTEZ (12.61),
ISABELLA BICKHAM (12.71),
LORALAI NASH (12.81), and
CADENCE COLICHER (12.81) also turned in solid runs.
LAUREN SANCHEZ (13.06),
EBBIN MALLORY (13.21), and
MICHELLE HERNANDEZ (13.22) rounded out the Hilltopper 100-meter entries.
Freshman
EMORY LIMUEL posted a solid outdoor debut in the 200 with a 13th-place finish in 25.50, while
SARAH-CATHERINE CHAPMAN (26.09), Bickham (26.25), Cooke (26.27), and
KARLY WEYAND (26.34) added depth.
Chapman and Limuel also produced strong performances in the 400, placing in the top eight. Chapman led the Hilltoppers with a sixth-place finish in 1:00.46, while Limuel followed closely in eighth at 1:00.97.
In the middle-distance races, freshman
BRIANNE VASQUEZ competed in both distance events for the Hilltoppers, finishing 16th in the 800 meters (2:39.65) before returning to place 12th in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:10.63.
The Hilltoppers also saw a record-tying performance in the hurdles from
MYOSIA VIRGIN, who matched the program record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 seconds, finishing fifth overall. Sophomore Mary-Kate Havens added another strong showing with an eighth-place finish in 15.64 seconds.
St. Edward's relay squad nearly reached the podium in the 4x100 relay, where the quartet of Colicher, Cooke, Cervantez, and Showemimo placed fourth overall in 48.60 seconds.
In the field events, freshman
LAUREN SANCHEZ led the Hilltoppers in the long jump, placing 10th with a mark of 4.78 meters (15-8.25), while
LORENA CERDA finished 13th with a jump of 4.33 meters.
Between the sprints, relays, and jumps, Showemimo finished the weekend responsible for three program records and two podium finishes, an emphatic continuation of the breakthrough campaign she began during the indoor season.
With a roster featuring several freshmen contributors and multiple record-setting performances to open the outdoor schedule, the Hilltoppers left Arlington with early momentum as the season gets underway. St. Edward's will compete in the Clyde Hart Classic hosted by Baylor on March 27.
