AUSTIN, Texas - Junior Reggie Shanks was 11-of-11 from the floor, scoring a career-high 27 points as St. Edward's dominated #14 Tarleton State, 88-70, Saturday afternoon at the Recreation
and Convocation Center.
St. Edward's (4-1) started the game on a 12-7 run in the first six minutes. Shanks was on fire, going 4-of-4 from the field for nine points. The Hilltoppers also forced Tarleton State (4-2)
into three turnovers during the run.
After a three-pointer from Tarleton State's Kalif Bakare cut the lead to three, the Hilltoppers fought back getting a layup from sophomore Jeff Miner, a three-pointer by junior Jannik
Zimmer, and two free-throws from junior Cory Griffin to extend the lead to 21-10, with 9:30 remaining in the first half.
Tarleton State then went on an 11-5 run over the next four minutes to cut the Hilltopper lead to 26-21, with 5:27 remaining in the opening half. Eric Williams scored five points and Darrion
Washington added four points to get the Texans back into the game.
From there, Shanks began to take over. The Houston, Texas native, scored six of the Hilltoppers' next seven points to push the lead to 12 points. Junior Tylor Carr and freshman Chase
Spruiell helped the home team extend the lead even further. Spruiell scored seven points in the final two-plus minutes and Carr added three points, with his jumper barely beating the halftime
buzzer. The offensive explosion helped push St. Edward's to a 43-26 advantage at the break.
St. Edward's shot a blistering 70 percent from the floor, making four shots from behind the arc. The Hilltoppers controlled the boards, outrebounding the Texans, 15-9 and forcing Tarleton
State into 10 turnovers.
In the second half, Tarleton State came out on a 15-8 run in the first six minutes to cut the lead to 51-41. Jeremiah Wilson tallied five points while Williams and Wale Ogunoye added four
points each.
But that is as close as the Texans would get the rest of the way. Shanks added two more shots from downtown for good measure and the Hilltoppers ran away with the victory.
"Tarleton State is a very good team with a lot of talent," head coach Ryan Marks said. "I was proud of the way our guys played tonight in the fact that we were able to play at very high
level the entire game. We still need to improve some if we are going to play against this kind of talent, that will only get better, at the end of the season."
Not only was Shanks perfect from the field, he was also spotless from the charity stripe, making both of his foul shots. Senior Taylor Mullenax added 12 points and five rebounds, while Carr
came off of the bench to register 11 points. The Hilltoppers dished out 21 assists as a team with senior Taylor Land leading the way with eight helpers. St. Edward's has tallied at least 20
assists in the past three games. All three were victories for the squad.
Williams led the Texans with a double-double, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds. Wilson and Ogunoue both scored 10 points for Tarleton State. Effran Bryant led the Texans with five
assists.
St. Edward's scorched the nets at 67 percent from the floor and 56 percent from behind the three-point line. They held the Texans to 45 percent from the floor and 32 percent from behind the
arc.
St. Edward's will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to take on NCAA Division I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the American Bank Center in Corpus
Christi. Check the St. Edward's Athletic Website for details on live audio.
