Box Score 2 ODESSA, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team tallied 32 hits on its way to a doubleheader sweep over Heartland conference rival UT-Permian Basin Friday afternoon at Rhoden Field. The Hilltoppers shut out the Falcons in game one, 9-0, then blistered the home team with a 15-1 victory in the second game.
Game 1: St. Edward's (6-3, 5-0 HC) opened the scoring in the first inning when the Hilltoppers loaded up the bases with one out and Taylor Johnson (Sophomore, Dripping Springs, Texas) drove home the first run of the game with a single.
Hilltopper starting pitcher Jeff Rohrbach (Junior, Houston, Texas) had the right stuff on the mound, limiting UT-Permian Basin (4-9, 2-6 HC) to just one hit through the first four innings.
The Hilltoppers would break the game wide open in the top of the fourth inning when they would bat around, gaining six runs on four hits and the Falcons committed four errors to give St. Edward's a 7-0 advantage.
St. Edward's would add single runs in the fifth and sixth inning and Rohrbach finished off the shutout. The righthander allowed only five hits, while walking one and striking out two in 7.0 innings of work. This was his third shutout if his career and 10th career complete game.
Johnson and Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) led St. Edward's at the plate with each collecting three hits.
Game 2: It was UT-Permian Basin who struck first as the Falcons scored in the first inning off of Hilltopper starter Stephen Johnson (Sophomore, Boulder, Colo.). Travis Wilcox picked up a two-out RBI to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
St. Edward's would respond with one run in both the second and third inning to claim the lead, 2-1.
Again, the Hilltoppers would break the game wide open in the fourth inning when they plated five runs on three hits. St. Edward's scored three more in the sixth inning and five in the seventh inning to end the game with a run-rule.
Johnson improved his record to (2-1) after allowing one run on nine hits, while Walking one and striking out three batters.
St. Edward's had six players finish with more than one hit during the game, with Wes Koenig (Sophomore, Austin, Texas) registering two triple which ties him for most triple in a game in Hilltopper history. He also produced four RBI as well.
"We played well-balanced baseball today with pitching setting the tone," head coach
Rob Penders said. "When you are able to control the defensive side of the game, it allows the offense to relax and take good at-bats. We did that and the scores were a result of that. We hope to carry that same approach into tomorrow's game."
The two teams will be back in action Saturday when the two squads face off for the final game of their three-game series. The single game is set for 1 p.m. at Rhoden Field.
