Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas - Will McCaleb's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning of game two, led St. Edward's to a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M-International Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers won the first game, 6-2, and took the second game by a score of 7 to 6 in extra innings.
Game 1
In game one, St. Edward's (24-22, 18-11 HC) got on the board early in the first inning. Colin Elmore (Junior, Dallas, Texas) led off the inning with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Dylan Schuch (Senior, Austin, Texas). Adam Shank (Junior, Sugar Land, Texas) picked up his team-leading 61st RBI to plate Elmore.
The Hilltoppers would break the game wide open in the third inning, scoring four runs. Elmore, Schuch, and Shank would single in order to score Elmore. Schuch would come in to score on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Homann (Freshman, The Woodlands, Texas). After Shank stole second he would come in to score on a double by Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas). Johnson would also score on a single by Joe Pirozzolo (Sophomore, The Woodlands, Texas). For Pirozzolo, it was his eighth-straight in as many at-bats dating back to last weekend. He would end the first game, going 3-for-3 and extending the streak to nine.
When asked about his streak, Pirozzolo said, "you just have to stay focused and do the little things. You take what the opposition gives you. Coach Sutaris did a good job of preparing me this past two weeks."
Texas A&M-International (19-30, 13-16 HC) would plate two unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Hilltopper starting pitcher Stephen Johnson (Sophomore, Boulder, Colo.) would shut them out the rest of the way. The righthander would allow just the two unearned runs as he scattered eight hits, while walking one and striking out six in 6.0 innings of work. Dustin Johnson (Senior, Austin, Texas) came on to finish off the game in the seventh inning, giving up one hit and striking out a batter.
The victory clinched the second seed for the Hilltoppers in next week's Heartland Conference Tournament.
Game 2
In game two, the Hilltoppers would get on the board first again as they plated a run in the first inning. The Dustdevils would commit two errors with two outs to give the Hilltoppers the run.
TAMU-International would tie the game up in the second inning with a single run and took the lead in the third inning with another run.
St. Edward's would answer in the third inning with two runs to retake the lead. Homann would drive in Elmore, who reached on a leadoff single, and Pirozzolo singled in Homann for the lead.
The Dustdevils had the answer, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Pirozzolo, again, led the charge in the seventh inning, beating out an infield single with Johnson on at second base. His speed caused an overthrow by the thirdbaseman and allowed Johnson to score.
The Hilltoppers would tie the game in the eighth inning when a fielding error by the Dustdevil secondbaseman with two men that plated the tying run.
Both starting pitchers kept the other team from scoring until the 11th inning. Dustdevil starter John Gonzalez went 9.0 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out five. His defense committed six errors behind him. Landon Patterson (Senior, Leander, Texas) was equally impressive as he came out of the bullpen and threw 8.0 solid innings. He allowed four runs on while scattering 11 hits, walking one and striking out six batters to pick up his sixth victory of the season.
In the top of the 11th inning, Austin Voros was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Korey Gosselin sacrificed Voros to second where he was lifted for a pinch runner in Angel Garcia. Garcia would come in to score on a single to left field by Will Wurth.
That set the stage for the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the inning. Pirozzolo led off with a triple to the right field corner that brought McCaleb to the plate. The shortstop launched a 1-1 curveball form relief pitcher James Santillon over the left field fence to set the Hilltopper dugout into a frenzy.
"It feels good to come through for my team," McCaleb said. "This team has a no-quit attitude and it definitely showed today."
Head Coach
Rob Penders also added about the exciting win, "We put two good at-bats together in that final inning. Both guys were sitting on certain pitches and when they got them, they delivered."
The two teams will finish out the three-game series on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m. The game has been deemed as "Senior Day", as the Hilltoppers will honor their six seniors.
