Hilltopper volleyball wins fifth-straight with sweep of Panhandle State

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's volleyball team won its fifth-straight match as they took out Panhandle State, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The Hilltoppers won, 25-13, 25-19, 25-13.
 
St. Edward's (10-5, 5-2 HC) raced out to a 10-4 lead in the first set on the strength of three kills by MARY KOEHLER. The lead would extend to 20-13, and the Hilltoppers would close the set out with five-straight points.
 
In the second set, it was Panhandle State (4-14, 0-7 HC) who jumped out to an early lead at 7-3 with Erica Skipper and Sarah Koster leading the way. Both Aggies had two kills each. However, it was St. Edward's who responded. They would fight back to tie the score, 13-13, with Koehler at it again with three kills during the spurt. They would go on to win the second set, 25-19.
 
In the final set, the two teams would trade points and were tied, 8-8. St. Edward's would win seven of the next nine points to take a 15-10 advantage. REBECCA SCHNABEL would tally two kills to spark the rally. From there, the Hilltoppers would cruise, winning 10 of the last 13 points to take the match.
 
Koehler led the offensive attack with 10 kills, while Schnabel chipped in with seven of her own.LOREN KELLY dished out a game-high 16 assists. KENDYLL SEVERA notched a career-high 11 digs to lead the Hilltoppers. The team hit a season-high .340 and held the Aggies to a .066 hitting percentage.
 
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference leader UA Fort Smith. First-serve is set for 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on the Lion Website.
