Box Score LAREDO, Texas – St. Edward's knocked out 19 hits to finish off the sweep of Texas A&M-International, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field. The victory vaults the Hilltoppers into second place of the Heartland Conference.
St. Edward's (15-6, 12-5 HC) would score one run in each of the first three innings. Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) and Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) each had RBI's during the scoring.
Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) would come up with a huge two-out RBI in the fifth inning to increase the St. Edward's lead to 4-0.
Hilltopper starting pitcher Jeff Rohrbach (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) was brilliant for the first four innings as he scattered six hits and kept TAMU-International (13-14, 7-11 HC) scoreless.
TAMU-International finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Austin Voros drove in two runs with a double to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Hilltoppers would answer with a run in the seventh inning, as Harris would drive in another run.
The Dustdevils made the game a little tighter in the bottom of the seventh inning when Voros doubled home two more runs to cut the lead to 5-4.
Ross Speed came in to pitch the eighth inning and got the Hilltoppers through to the ninth inning.
After St. Edward's got a little cushion from a Will McCaleb (Houston, Texas/Blinn JC) RBI in the top of the ninth. Stephen Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) came in for the ninth and picked up his fifth save of the season.
Koenig, Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) and Rogers all had three hits during the game.
Since starting the season 2-4, St. Edward's has rattled off victories in 13 of its last 15 games.
St. Edward's will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to take on University of Houston-Victoria. The single game will begin at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park in Victoria, Texas.
