St. Edward’s takes first two games of series against UA-Fort Smith

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT SMITH, Ark. – The St. Edward's baseball team took both games on day one of the three game series against UA-Fort Smith this afternoon. St. Edward's took the first game 13-7 and the second game 6-5. Game 1 UA-Fort Smith (13-12, 9-10 HC) would score first by collecting three runs in the first inning. With two men on base Jordan May hit a double bringing in Ben Kozma. Gordon Miller then hit a single to center field bringing in Christian Allen and May. St. Edward's (18-6, 14-5 HC) would not let the Lions early lead get the best of them as the Hilltoppers answered back in the second scoring five runs of their own. With the bases loaded Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) hit a double to left field collecting two RBI as Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) and Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Richland College) scored. Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) brought AJ Hermanson (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) home off of a single to right field. With Rogers on third Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto College) sent a single to right field collecting an RBI as Rogers came home. Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) would give K. Harris time to score as he reached on a fielder's choice, sacrificing Shank at second. With five runs off of five hits the Hilltoppers would take the lead from the Lions, 5-3. The Lions would collect a run in the third inning, closing the gap 5-4, but the Hilltoppers would follow with a run of their own. In the top of the fourth Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) struck out swinging but reached first base on an error by the catcher. With Shank at bat T. Johnson quickly stole second and was brought home as Shank placed a single into left field giving Johnson more than enough time to make it home and score. The Hilltoppers now led, 6-4. In the top of the fifth, St. Edward's would collect two more runs as LaLonde singled to second base, and advanced to second as Elmore was hit by the pitch. Hermanson followed with a single to center field. With bases loaded Rogers reached on a fielder's choice, even though Hermanson was out at second this gave LaLonde time to score, who was followed by Elmore who scored on an error by the Lions second baseman. This increased the HIlltoppers lead to 8-4. By the seventh inning St. Edward's was not content with a four-run lead and would collect five more runs to secure their lead. LaLonde doubled to left field and advanced to third on a SAC bunt by Elmore. Hermanson was walked and then stole second. Rogers brought in both men off of a double to right center field. T. Johnson would not leave Rogers stranded as he followed with a homerun to left center field. K. Harris would hit a double to left field and would bring himself home as he advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. With St. Edward's up 13-4, the Lions would make a push in the seventh but would only secure three runs as the Hilltoppers would not give up the win. The game would end in favor of the Hilltoppers, 13-7. Game 2 In game two, UA-Fort Smith came out strong and scored two runs in the first inning. The first run was scored off a double to left center by May allowing Taylor Shaddy to score. The second was off of a sacrifice fly by Gordon Miller brining in Christian Allen. St. Edward's answered back scoring two runs of its own as Hermanson singled to left field collecting an RBI as Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) scored. LaLonde would score the second run off of a passed ball, tying up the game 2-2. In the fourth inning, the Hilltoppers would score when Hermanson got on base after being hit by the pitch. Hermanson then stole second, then advanced to third on an error by the first baseman and then came home to score on an error by the Lions center fielder. Koenig would single to center field in the fifth inning brining in K. Harris who had been waiting at third. This extended the Hilltoppers lead to 4-2. The Lions would not let the Hilltoppers get a far lead in this game and would collect a run as Miller singled to left field brining in a fellow Lion. In the sixth inning, Hermanson got on base and advanced to second off of another error by the Lions. Hermanson was brought home by Rogers who sent a single to center field making the score 5-3. LaLonde would score the last run for the Hilltoppers off of a wild pitch by K. Thompson in the eighth inning. With the score 6-3, the Lions tried to take the game but were stopped short by the Hilltoppers who only allowed two runs to be scored in the ninth inning. St. Edward's took the second game 6-5. Leaders for UA-Fort Smith were Miller who collected four hits and four RBI and May who had five hits and three RBI for the day. Leaders for St. Edward's include Rogers who secured two hits and five RBI in the first game alone. T. Johnson who had two hits and two RBI, collecting the only homerun of the day. Followed by Shank who collected two hits and two RBI. Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC) would take the win in game one after pitching five innings, allowing seven hits, with two shutouts and one walk. Matt Davis (Taft, Calif./Taft JC) took the win in game two pitching 6.2 innings allowing six hits and having eight shutouts. St. Edward's will be back in action tomorrow as they finish the three game series against UA-Fort Smith at 1 p.m. As a member of NCAA Division II and the Heartland Conference, St. Edward's, has captured 47 conference titles, advanced to the NCAA tournament 50 times and has produced 31 All-Americans and 32 Academic All-Americans since 1999.
