Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team defeated longtime rival #2 St. Mary's with a come-from-behind 9-8 win in the final game if a three-game series. The victory gave the Hilltoppers the series victory two games to none. Adam Shank lead the team by driving in five runs off of two doubles.
St. Mary's (15-4, 13-2 HC) struck first in the third inning as Mario Maldonado collected an RBI off of a double, bringing in Derek Moczygemba and giving the Rattlers an early 1-0 lead.
The Rattlers would secure two more runs in the fifth when Maldonado singled to right field bringing in Esteban Raygoza. This was quickly followed by a double from Billy Richard, bringing Maldonado home, extending the Rattlers lead to 3-0.
In the sixth inning Brandon Bates hit a double to right center field bringing in M.P. Cokinos. Bates was not left stranded as Raygoza hit a sacrifice fly to center field giving Bates time to score, putting the Rattlers up by five.
Until this point St. Mary's pitcher, Skye Severn had only allowed one hit from St. Edward's (9-5, 7-4 HC) but in the bottom of the sixth the Hilltoppers found their momentum. With Daniel Homann (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) on base from a single, Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) was walked by Severn, and Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Senior Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto College) brought all three men home off of a double over the right fielder's head, putting the Hilltoppers on the board, 5-3.
St. Mary's would try and pull away by scoring two runs in the seventh when Josh McElroy hit a double to right field giving Richard time to score. Cokinos brought in McElroy off of a single to center field. This would be all St. Edward's would allow as St. Edward's brought in closer Steven Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS).
With the score now 7-3, in favor of the Rattlers the Hilltoppers had to find their rhythm, and they did not disappoint. In the bottom of the seventh, Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) got on base with a single to center field. Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) followed with a single to left field.
With a new pitcher for the Rattlers, Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both men. Homann was then walked. With bases loaded St. Mary's then walked Rogers, giving the Hilltoppers a run as Koenig came home. Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Richland College) sent a single to center field just between the shortstop and second base man collecting an RBI as Burford scored.
St. Mary's changed pitchers again in the seventh hoping to stop the Hilltoppers from scoring as they brought in its closer, Jonathan Perez. The righthander had not allowed an earned run al Efforts were refuted as T. Johnson reached on a fielder's choice getting Homann home to score, while Elmore was out a second.
Shank came through again for the Hilltoppers bringing in both Rogers, who was on third, and T. Johnson, who was on first, off of a double sent deep into left field. This gave St. Edward's its first lead, 9-7.
In the ninth inning, St. Mary's would get one run when Cokinos singled to left field sending Richard home to score. This would be the only run St. Edward's would allow, taking the game 9-8.
Leader for St. Mary's was Cokinos who collected three hits and two RBI, followed by Maldonado with two hits and two RBI.
Leader for St. Edward's was Shank who tallied two hits and five RBI, along with Elmore and Burford who each had two hits.
St. Edward's will be back in action Tuesday as they host West Texas A&M. First-pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
