Burford’s three homers lead St. Edward’s to a 19-9 mauling of #28 West Texas A&M

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team maintained its winning streak with a commanding victory over West Texas A&M this afternoon, 19-9. St. Edward's (10-5) took an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning when Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) hit a single to center field bringing home Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC). Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) followed with a two-run homerun over the left field fence line, giving the Hilltoppers an early lead of 3-0. In the second inning, the Hilltoppers were unstoppable and secured a total of 11 runs off of seven hits. Daniel Homann (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) got on base and quickly stole bases to advance to third. Senior Mark Thomas (Moline, ill./Northlake CC) was walked. Then Homann was brought home on a sacrificed fly ball by Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC). Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) singled to right field advancing Thomas to third. With two men on base K. Harris hit a double down the left field line collecting an RBI as Thomas scored. The Buffs would then walk Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto College) but were unable to prevent the Hilltoppers from scoring as Koenig hit a double down the left field line to the fence allowing three runs to scored. Burford made things look easy as he followed with a second homerun to left field. Even with the score now 7-0, the second inning would not end as the Hilltoppers continued to connect with the ball. Now on the third pitcher of the inning, Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) reached on a throwing error by the second baseman and was brought home by Rogers as he sent a single to left field. T. Johnson followed with a huge homerun to right field, collecting 3 RBI. The second inning would end Hilltoppers up 14-0. Brad Nasis (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS) had done a great job only allowing two hits in the first two innings but West Texas A&M (10-4) would not be left in the dust as they collected seven runs in the third inning. With bases loaded, Jordan Easom would be walked, bringing in a runner. Kendall Boone would hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Eric Dorton. With bases loaded and a pitching change for the Hilltoppers, the first batter faced by Paul Smith (Austin, Texas/McNeil HS) would be walked. Smith would find his grove and begin throwing strikes but N. Marquez would hit a single to centerfield collecting two RBI. With the Buffs on the board and the score now 14-5, the Buffs brought in P. Wood to pinch it and collected an RBI off a single to right filed. The last run for the Buffs in the inning would be made off of a sacrificed fly out to center filed by E. Dorton, bringing in Marquez. Even with the score now 14-7, St. Edward's did not lose momentum and collected two runs in the third as Burford collected his third homerun of the game bringing in Koenig. Making the score now 16-7. In the fourth inning St. Edward's would collect another run as K. Harris hit a double down the right field line, giving T. Johnson enough time to go from first base to home plate, extending the lead to 17-7. In the fifth and sixth innings, West Texas A&M would collect one run in each adding two point to the board. Making the score 17-9. In the eighth inning St. Edward's struck gold again as Rogers would hit a triple to left center field bringing in Thomas and would also score off of a throwing error made by the Buffs. The game would end Hilltoppers up 19-9. Leaders for West Texas A&M were Marquez and Justin Henderson who each collected two hits and two RBI, followed by Jarvis Smith with three hits and one RBI. Leaders for St. Edward's were Burford who had three homeruns in the game collecting six RBI, Koenig who had three hits and four RBI. T. Johnson had two hits, one was a homerun, and three RBI. Matt Davis (Taft, Calif./Taft JC) collected the win allowing only two hits, one run, and no errors and three strikeouts. St. Edward's will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Goodwell, Oklahoma to take on Panhandle State in a three game series. Friday's double header will kick off at 12:00pm.
