ABILENE, Texas – Coming off a 5-1 victory over Central Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament, the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's looked to knock off the number one seed Abilene Christian in the finals. However, a home court advantage and a national ranking of #6, Abilene Christian proved to be too much for the 36th-ranked Hilltoppers to handle, who lost their final match of the season, 5-0 at the Eager Tennis Courts.
St. Edward's (15-10) dropped its second match of the year to Abilene Christian this year, with the most recent one coming in the NCAA Regional Tournament. In their previous match up, St. Edward's was defeated, 7-0, and once again the Hilltoppers got shutout 5-0.
The only spark of light shinning through the clouds for St. Edward's came at No. 1 doubles where Alexandra Khadzhyan (Murmansk, Russia/Murmansck Secondary) and Audrey Tompkins (Katy, Texas/Taylor HS) took the 11th-ranked pair of Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf the distance, forcing a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, Kelley and Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian edged out Tompkins and Khadzhyan defeating them, 9-8 (7-3).
This loss concludes the St. Edward's Women's Tennis team's season where they earned a 15-10 overall record, a national ranking of #36, Heartland Conference Coach of the Year, and five All-Heartland Conference selections.
