AUSTIN, Texas - McMurry shot 64 percent from the field to take down St. Edward's 101-92, Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center. The loss ended a four-game winning streak by the Hilltoppers.
St. Edward's (10-7) opened the game on a 13-5 run in the first three minutes of action.
SHIMEEK JOHNSON was on fire to start the game, nailing all three shots he took from behind the arc.
The Hilltoppers would hold the momentum and a layup by
TYLER FOSTER gave St. Edward's a 21-14 advantage at the 13:14 mark. McMurry (8-2) got back in the game using a 12-2 run over the next three minutes. Takoby Jackson hit two shots from behind the arc during the run and Antonio Bell added another trey to lead the War Hawks.
Back-to-back buckets by
HARLEY NUSSMAN and a runner by Foster gave the lead back to St. Edward's, 29-27, with 8:51 on the clock.
Six points each by Kaylim Noel and Alfred Perez helped the War Hawks close the half ahead, 41-39.
In the second half, St. Edward's would come out full-force, outscoring McMurry, 9-4 in the first four minutes to take a three-point lead, 48-45, with 16:04 on the clock. Four points by
JEFF CAMPBELL and a trey by Johnson gave the Hilltoppers the lead.
That is when the War Hawks heated up from the floor. Shooting 18-of-22 (82 percent) from the floor in the second half helped the visitors take a double-digit lead, which grew to as many as 13 points, with four minutes left in the contest. St. Edward's was only able to get as close as seven points from there on out as the War Hawks ended with 33 makes from the charity stripe.
Johnson led all scorers with 28 points, which included 10-for-16 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from behind the three-point line. Campbell added 13 points as the only other player in double figures.
Jackson led the War Hawks with 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, and 4-of-6 from the three-point line. Jackson led six players in double-figure scoring. Bell had 19 points, Noel added 17 and both Perez and Connor Robinson chipped in with 12 points each. Chris Campbell scored 11 points off of the bench.
St. Edward's will be back in action Thursday when they host Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Live Video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
